Last season, with Smart at the controls, was the highest scoring offense we’ve had under Wade. Plus he wasn’t originally a point guard, he was a 2 guard who had to convert to being a point. Those other 2 guys were true point guards from the get go.

Both the highest scoring offense and most efficient. I thought LSU terrific offensive output/efficiency in the first two years was almost entirely a byproduct of Waters. But two years later the numbers show LSU's offense was just as good, if not better, with Smart at the primary PG.

Now, Smart had less assists than Waters, and certainly less great passes. But he also had less TOs. Smart turned the ball over like crazy in his first few games of the 19-20 season and fans never realized that was an aberration. But the time SEC play finished that year Smart was among the best in conf. play in assist-to-turnover ratio. He continued that into last season while also shooting 52% from 2-pt range and 40% from 3.

Is he a prototypical NBA PG? Probably not. And he isn't going to be a 1st round pick. But he was a tremendous competitor for LSU with a tremendous motor who always seemed to have a knack for playing his best in big moments. That attitude and his scoring ability gives him a shot to make a NBA roster

I think you’re going to see more guys like him moving forward as everyone is a stretch player now and basketball isn’t so textbook

Coach Wade addressed that on one of his radio shows early in the season 2 years ago. If you remember Tremont Waters went through a similar stretch his second season when he was asked to be more of a facilitator once we had talent around him in that second season to the point where he was benched for a couple games. Wade said that Smart was going through a similar transition moving from the 2 to the 1 but he said that Smart was working extremely hard and was much more open to it than Waters. Wade said Smart was a guy who wanted to please his coaches and teammates and had no resistance to changing his game because he was more concerned with being a leader than his numbers dipping. I think if he gets a legitimate chance he’ll stick in the NBA because of his attitude and talent.

I'm not saying he wasn't a good player, just saying his shot selection wasn't always the best.
