Notice the ball he smoked at the 1B was against a RHP. He was LSU's best hitter the first month and a half of the season. He has cooled of late, mostly against the southpaws. I know it's only one swing, but for the guy wanting to know what's he done when it counts, he hit a HR vs. Baylor in a game that we won 3-2 in extra innings. Take his HR away and who knows if we even got out of the sub-regional.

All I know is that he has been TERRIBLE at the plate the last month.

Bench him. Pinch run him. I wouldn't let him him touch a bat the rest of the cws

MLB scouts, who get paid thousands upon thousands of dollars, should have consulted the Rant before making such a grievous error and drafting Mitchell.

Does Smoke really get paid that much?

come on guys, you can't throw a player like him under the bus. After all he has done for LSU and I think he deserves better, lets appreriate players why they are still in a LSU uniform.

Absolutely beautiful. I was arguing earlier about this. People were saying he was only batting in the .320's cuz of weak competition and that he's been terrible in sec play.
It's amazing people want to bench a 1st round draft pick when he was a key component of what got us here. We've played 67 games (I think), and I believe every game he's played he's started...yet, even though we have the #1 team int he country, best record in the country, we should bench him once we get to the college world series.
Seriously, the ONLY people that actually want Jared Mitchell benched are people who have no clue waht baseball is. I'm disappointed with his performance inthe SR and tonight's game, but you don't bench a guy who can easily steal any base and gets on base nearly half the time he bats.

he's one of our best players and has the highest OBP on the team. He got screwed by the ump behind the plate tonight. He hit a rocket against the rightee and got walked tonight. 2 stikeouts,a linedrive, and a run scored. one of the strikeouts was bullshite. He is too patient at the plate (it can also be a strength for him--see all the walks)

I've got a feeling his not swinging has something more to do with the coach's instructions than him just decided to watch pitches. Otherwise, Sanchez would have told him something by now and he'd be up there free swinging Adam Dunn style.
The guy admittedly is not going to bat .350 but he's dangerous at the plate because he knows how to work a count. I find the only time he swings is when he has to, ie., 1-2 count or 0-2. I guess if you play the percentages, 4/10 times you're going to walk if you just sit up there in his case. The rest is a mix of strikeouts and hits.
I'm not a big fan of Jared at the plate but I have a feeling that's more of a coach's decision than him just not being aggressive.

Eh he will have a terrible day where he strikes out then people dont remember the game he may have gone 3/4 with a SB because they were all singles or something.
If he is getting on base 40% of time and hitting .300 he is doing something right to be in the lineup.

Jmitch does strikeout alot and seems very tentative at the plate. However those people saying he should be benched are just stupid. He's still got one of the better averages on the team so we know he can hit. He gets a ton of walks to go with his strikeouts and he gets into pitchers heads when he's on the bases.
I gurantee before the cws is over he makes a game-changing play be it in the outfield, the batter's box, or the base path.

i doubt that seriously, PM complains about hitters who dont swing, he likes agressive hitters, ive heard him talk about it on more than 1 occasion

I love these threads. The dude gets on base at least once a game, and that's enough to warrant a spot in the lineup. What he can do on the bases paths warrants it. Its an automatic double when he's on. Not to mention the way he messes with pitchers. You'd be an idiot to bench him.

Mitchell's selection in the first round was predicated on his athleticism and potential to improve. While I'm not calling for his removal from the lineup, that would be silly, he is absolutely the last guy I would want to see at the plate in a critical situation. Honestly, I would prefer to see Nola than Mitchell come to bat if the game were on the line.

These are the stats in the last 3 games since the Regional ended.
Rice Game 1 - 0 for 4
Rice Game 2 - 1 for 4
Virginia - 0 for 3
1 for 11, .082
Awful
I think the criticism over his play at this time of year is justified. I have no faith in him getting a hit in the clutch right now whatsoever. Maybe that will change but there is no denying he has been one of our worst hitters since the Regional ended.
