That should’ve been our strategy last year too. Then we would’ve beaten a lot more teams 50-7

Common thought process it seems is our offense will take a step back this season, unsurprising from the historic highs of last year. But the defense will take a big step up to offset. So we’ll still have a very good team - how good will be determined by high much of an impact Myles and Pelini have

Aranda did a great job last year of adjusting to what we had. The Clemson game and how he shutdown Trevor Lawrence was next level stuff.

Defense from halftime of the arky game thru Clemson was elite

I do think we have the potential to be really stout and good against the run up front. Plenty of talent in the secondary. Gotta get pressure.

i think a lot of the fans who want the "traditional" LSU D are the ones who also said Urban Meyer's offense was a gimmick that would never work in the SEC and "air raid" passing would never win the SEC or a natty

Somehow this useless comparison doesn’t seem worthy of the great SFP. LSU not screwing up last year has affected you clearly.

Outside of last year (which is arguable), when was the last time we weren't physically imposing? The year Steele was in charge?

I didn’t think we were as physical in 2018 either. Obvious Bama game but Georgia was pushing us around upfront also as did A&M. Orgeron himself admitted he needed better linemen.

He’s not exactly wrong.

Dominant defenses like LSU’s 03’ defense do not exist anymore, and it’s because of the way offenses are being composed.

Even Pelini has acknowledged that this year’s defense won’t look like what his defenses did in his previous stint. Offenses have evolved, and defenses have to as well.

2016 was very physically imposing. LSU was tied (with 3 teams) for 14th in sacks per game, rush defense was 13th, and we were 2nd in the country in defending long scrimmage plays of 10+ yards (Michigan St was the only other team in the top 10 that didn't play at least 13 games and they gave up 8 more plays of 10+ yards than we did).

Prior to the TAMU game, LSU had only given up 11 TDs all season. Prior to the TAMU game, LSU was 1st in the country giving up only 10.5 ppg (against Louisville in the bowl game, we shut down Lamar Jackson, and gave up 3 FGs).

Had LSU maintained their scoring defense vs TAMU, we would have finished with the best scoring defense in the country since 2011. That's between the span of 2011-2019.

Has nothing to do with Urban Meyer’s offenses or the air raid. Also, Auburn’s defense last year was a lot like what Pelini will do. Clemson’s too. Nobody is saying go back to 2003.

That’s what people are running and not stopping consistently

Auburn’s defensive front was good cause they had two top 50 draft picks

26th in team defense in 2018. 33rd in 2019. Both but not irrational to expect better. Georgia and Florida were both better defensively and we can be too.

The same people who think we need a more aggressive defense are not the ones saying the air raid won’t work. That’s a baseless comparison.

So let’s go get us some of those guys and run that type of defense.

How about overall defense? And how about Georgia or Florida? Or did the changing modern offenses impact LSU only?

LSU had more sacks than Uga. Not Florida

Overall defense doesn’t mean much. ESP for a team like LSU & the way they scored the ball.

It’s all about overall defense. Sacks are situational and don’t mean much. LSU went from 14th to 26th to 31st year over year from 17-19. The “way they scored” argument holds true in just one of those years.

Clemson, Ohio St, Georgia etc were better during the same time.

Georgia didn’t have a modern offense lastbyear

And Florida’s defense gave up 42 points to LSU which was the only good offense they played all year.

LSU’s defense clearly had some games where they just let up when we went up big, but overall that was a good defense especially when they got their act together

No argument there.
