I've got guarded optimism for our "D" next year.

As I stated in an earlier post, I watched the 2006 Tennesse-v-LSU game. I also have the 2005 game and the SECCG from 2007.

We moved the ball up and down the field those three games. Yeah we only won by a TD in the SECCG, but we had some turnovers, and was inside the 10 3 times in the first half, coming away with only 6 points.

Same thing in 2006. Jamarcus threw 3 picks, and we had another turnover, but we moved the ball up and down the field. Incidently, only 1 of the picks was due to a great defensive play, the other 2 were just bad throws.

I think the talent will be pretty much a wash. Yeah, UT has better linebackers, but LSU has better lineman, and the db's have been about equal.

I'm just a little skeered.

It's understandable. It's a new guy in town and until he proves he's legit we'll all be skeptical. But I think he's going to be good. I think Chavis is special.

Look at it like this. Remember the UT/UF game this past year? UF ended up winning by a lot, but for much of the game UT was in it, why? Not because of UT's god-awful offense, but rather their defense.

The "D" will be better in 2009 and get better as the season goes on and they learn the system, and they'll be back in the top 3 in 2010

Is he perfect? No
Will we have the best D in the SEC? No.
Is he 5x better than what we had? Yes.
Will our D be better? Yes.

Sounds like the D coaches are firing the players up and giving them an attitude. Chavis sounds like he is going to hold the high ground and let the offense come to him. I like that kind of swagger.

I never have liked Chavis's defensive scheme. The whole cornerback playing ten yds off the line of scrimmage thing leaves a lot of room for mistakes and opportunities for the offense. However, i do think we have better position coaches than UThug had and also we have more talent. So we should be a lot better

I see that too, but then I read Patrick Peterson's quote in the reville today:

quote:

All of us are coming back for our second year together. The way we went into practicing, we are going to be more aggressive, more an in-your-face, smash-mouth defense.

Granted this was only after a couple practices, but still gets you wondering.

Looking at just the score of the games that tennessee had last year, they gave up 30 points 1 time, to florida, we gave up 30 points 5 times last year, and 3 times the year before that, the year we won it all. I wouldn't be that worried, his offense last year only scored 30 3 times. I don't know much but i think that this guy will be a good addition to our team. Anything will be better than last year, and he seems to be exciting the defense. geaux tigers

Thats better than having some average defenses and some poor ones.
