However, having a top 10-20 basketball program is a lot more valuable than having a top 5 baseball program in basically every way.

1. TV exposure hoops

2. money hoops

In terms of buzz and excitement around the team? Absolutely. Football was playing in front of 70% capacity crowds.

Which were still more than 4 times as big as any basketball crowd. Even in the worst of the Hallman years, people certainly looked forward to football more than basketball. At least everyone I knew did.

LSU will never be what we want it to be ,not even close because we will have our coaches on the warm seat, ever third season killing his recruiting potential which is everything in college !

Wouldn't say we "looked forward to" football games, as we really sucked bad. I think it was a lot more anxious hope that we wouldn't suck quite so bad at times.
That was about the same time that the NCAA was hammering LSU in basketball too, thanks to Dale's "gestapo bastards" comments.
That also was about the time that baseball was really taking off, and we didn't have anything else to hang our hat on. And yes, I'm grateful that the baseball team was able to do what they did. But let's keep perspective about it.

Now, basketball in the early 80's was a special time. Dale had taken groups of solid players and made deep runs, and was challenging Kentucky annually for control of the SEC. The anticipation going into the year, 89 or 90... returning Chris Jackson (1st team All American and POTY), Vernel Singleton (exciting leaper), Wayne Sims (big burly post player that had handled up on Georgetown's Mutumbo and Mourning); and adding Stanley, Shaq, Mo Williamson (a CJ clone) and Harold Boudreaux (athletic 6'9", smooth shooter with range)... we were supposed to finally win it all. That was probably the most anticipated team ever on LSU's campus, of any sport. We finally had the talent across the board, no longer had to scrap.

I know I'm late to the party on this thread but gonna chime in anyway:

OP is spot on!!! Anyone who thinks that LSU basketball could never exceed the popularity of LSU baseball is either very young, a damn fool, or both. What if Wade happens to be our Billy Donovan, taking the Tigers on deep runs in the tourney and maybe even winning a Natty? Do you idiots really think LSU basketball won't be more popular than LSU baseball? Some stupid motherfrickers up in here.

Dale Brown showed how popular basketball can be with LSU faithful. The excitement for hoops in Baton Rouge was off the charts in those days. If Wade can have consistent success, that excitement will come back.

Carry on idiots.

Basketball is third and will continue to be third.

There's a lot of big talk, but have we seen any action yet? No.

I don't think Coach Wade can deliver, but I hope I'm wrong.

You're one of the dumbfricks who didn't think Jones should be fired. Your opinion is 100% irrelevant on this issue.

Really not sure what you're asking or saying here.

Maravich I assume? Of course he was incredible. But without success after he left, interest would have dropped and not come back.

No program in 10 years?

You sir, are an idiot. College baseball will NEVER be bigger than college basketball, sorry. I love the baseball Tigers don't get me wrong, but it's not even up for debate.

How is he an idiot when I'd take LSU Baseball over Basketball any day everyday? It seems like it's YOUR preference. Stop acting like you're speaking on behalf of everyone.
