I believe you are correct. The 1986 team, Bertman's first to reach the CWS, started out 21-1. Pretty sure that was the best start until this one.

33 games into the year I hope we’re off to a better start than we were in 1997: 30-3 (12-1) but that’ll require us being 31-2 (11-1) after the Oklahoma series. With the level of competition in 2025 vs decades ago I’d call that the best start in lsu history hands down at the midway point of a season
