In my lifetime(I’m 38 and I don’t count Dale because he was at the end of his career) he’s the worst Men’s Basketball coach. 1. Brady, 2. Wade, 3. Trent, 4. Jones 5. McMahon

Nobody in here said Smoke was a good coach. Show me the comment that said this? All they said was you can't put him in the "worst HC in LSU sport's history" which is correct because they at least got somewhere with him. LSU had much worse through their history. The original post is ridiculous hyperbole. Nobody is defending any of the 3 coaches.

Not even close. His downfall is recruiting. Dale Brown once had LSU at the pinnacle of the basketball world. We have not kept pace since then.

Recruiting has been more than adequate under McMahon he just can’t coach. The game probably passed Dale by when the 90s hit. He couldn’t manage the talent he was bringing in and could never get those teams playing with any consistency. There are similarities between the two coaches in that context only Brown could at least motivate kids and had a few tricks up his sleeve. McMahon doesn’t have Dale’s competitiveness, charisma or courage as a coach.

I don’t know. Winning a national championship and then burning it down in a year to set the program back to a 5 year laughing stock is pretty bad.

It’s also false. The transfer portal opened up two days after he was hired. He failed to convince them to stay.

He was better Basketball Coach than McMahon. McMahon is a solid recruiter. Very bad at all the other stuff.

Smoke inherited a dynasty at it’s peak and drove it straight into the ground. McMahon inherited a team with zero players and a situation that nobody wanted and his team was competitive when healthy. Totally different scenarios. Smoke deserves to be in the WOAT conversation.

We won the SEC despite Trent Johnson. He took over a top 10 program at Stanford and had sone of there worst seasons in years and then we hired him.

Smoke absolutely belongs in the conversation. He inherited a Ferrari from Skip and drove it straight into a wall. The program was in absolute shambles when Mainieri took over.

The program was in so bad of shape from Smoke that It took Paul 2 whole years to get LSU back in the CWS, and 3 years for LSU to win their 6th National Championship. Yep, that’s complete shambles alright.

And…. No transfer portal for Paul to go grab a bunch of players back then either.

You're just proving the point I made above. The original post is hyperbole. And no, Smoke is not in the conversation of worst of all time. Doesn't matter what you feel about the talent LSU had they still produced in a short term with him. The wheels fell off quickly. That doesn't make him the "worst of all time". I think you need you educate yourself on all LSU coaches through history.

He was a terrible coach but he's not on a shortlist of worst LSU coaches ever because they had some even worse than him.
