Not for the intimidate future. If Les learns to play his best players Lsu will be on top for many years.

I think the cycle has more to do with teams that had trouble with probation and coaching changes and less to do with "it's bound to happen"...

What about 08 & 09? I doubt we cycle down but I see years like those 2 every now and then. Playing in the SEC it isn't difficult to lose 4 games even with great talent.

Since 2000, LSU is one of a very few programs to average 10 wins a season and/or win 120 or more games (USC, Boise State, Oklahoma?)
I think Ohio State, Georgia and Texas also but not positive. (LSU has won 123.)
But LSU may be the ""ONLY"" program to have a winning season ""AND"" go to a bowl game EVERY year since 2000. We may also be the only team to win 8 bowl games since 2000.
Maybe Boise State?
I think we are also one of a few to go to 3 National Championship games since 2000 - Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma ?Texas? USC? Ohio State? Miami?
I think we are also tied with 4 BCS Bowl victories (4-1 overall) since 2001.
And with the team we have coming back the next 2 to 3 years, and with recruiting supposed to be better in '13 and '14, we should continue to be strong......

A LOT of people here immediately identified Jan 9th as the beginning of the end of Les Miles being a revered coach.
This has been said pretty much every season about Les Miles during his tenure at LSU.
Hell people said this in 2010 after we BEAT Tennessee.

Depends on what you mean by "down cycle". If you mean a 2-3 year period of 3-4 loss seasons, sure. every program will have that. But no time soon.
If you mean a return to the Curly era, not a chance.
LSU has too much in-state and nearby talent for any extended period of mediocrity. As long as the city of Houston or east Texas doesn't float away or the state of Mississippi suddenly disappear so the Tigers can't augment their in-state recruiting, LSU isn't going anywhere.
Plus, LSU is now a "brand". It is a top 10 program both in the eyes of the national media and potential recruits. And, LSU fans/alumni have now awakened to the potential of the Tiger football program. They are gonna keep the money flowing to compete with the other powers in the upkeep of facilities and coaching staffs.
Short answer:LSU ain't going anywhere.

Most of those program went through a major change (usually coaching) which effected them.
It didnt happen just because.
yea, it requires either a bad coaching hire or an old coach with a lot of political power and gets lazy; a la bobby bowden, joe paterno, etc.

Are you just trying to start some kind of food fight here?
No not trying to stir up any shite . Sustained excellence seems to be very elusive in college football and I was just hoping to start a discussion of the things that cause that.
I really hope LSU continues to kick arse for many years to come.

no. LSU is due to win the BCS national championship two years in a row. you read the pattern wrong. LSU wins in 2013 and 2014.
feel better now?

Yes you have identified a much better pattern!

the biggest factor is competition. There are a lot more elite level programs than there was 30-40 years ago. A lot more programs are making a lot more money and putting it into the program. Scholarship limits make it easier for more teams to become competitive as well.
LSU has put too much into the program to slide back to the Hallman years, but could and likely will have another couple years like 08-09 due to guys leaving early, some key recruits not working out, etc.

It has been said before, but i think that LSU's most recent "down cycle" was 2008 and 2009- largely surrounding the unsuccessful QB lineage and Perrilloux, a situation that even 2010 and 2011 didn't fully remedy.
I think that 2012 is the year when the LSU qb situation gets back on track. And, I think all the other pieces of the puzzle are there for another NC run. To quote Sam Montgomery following the loss on Jan 9th, when the reporter asked what was next for LSU, Big Sam responded "play for another BCS championship."
I think that LSU is firmly in the elite echelon of college football programs, and while a future "down cycle" is inevitable, it is certainly not on the horizon, and the future still looks very bright for the LSU tigers.

If anything we saw a down turn in 08 and 09. We also haven't gone through a head coaching change or put on any serious probation. We really were lucky to have Miles keep continue the winning tradition. A lot of schools go through hc changes that just don't work out or is hard for them to live up to expectations of the previous coach.

And no I do not think we should fire CLM.
You know there is a decent chance Miles gets to 90 wins before registering a 20th loss? We would have to get out of 2012 with only 1 loss, but it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility. That's completely unprecedented in LSU football history.
2 SEC Championships, 5 seasons (out of 7) of 11 wins or more. We literally just played in the big game. We are a pre-season top 5 team - in many cases #1 or #2, depending on whom you ask.
What is a "down" cycle? Didn't we have that in '08-'09?
Posted on 2/13/12 at 2:11 pm to coldhotwings
If you think a 10 win season isn't "success" then yeah we will have a down year or two coming up....
tool.
tool.

That is a mind boggling stat...especially for people who remember the hallman days.
ETA: Also how many losses does CLM have to the eventual National Champs? 4 over the last 4 years but not sure if more prior to that.
