What is the official stance of LSU regarding Mike having a female to meet his natural companionship needs? I think the time has come for Mike to take a mate and have a family. As Tigers have neared extinction we can do our part in helping Mike contribute to the Tiger population.

Tigers do not pair bond. They are extremely solitary animals that will meet to mate and then go their own ways. The meetings do not always go well. If the meeting does not go well and they're in Mike's enclosure, then you have 1500 pounds of pissed off cat stuck in a cage.

This is less than optimal.

Tried this years ago with an earlier Mike and a "girl" up at the Little Rock Zoo. Didn't work. All they did was quarrel.

They should do the same thing as they do with championship horses. Take his man juice and breed little mikes so that his blood will live on

What is the story with his bloodline? I'd be interested to read about that

Aren't Tigers similar to Cats but just a lot bigger??? Most cats don't get along with other cats. But sometimes they bond together quite well and do have fights time to time. If LSU put the time in can't they find a good paring for Mike and the other Tiger? If they get in a fight wouldn't that just be part of their being Tigers? It's not like we are wanting them to act like humans.

This.

It's not like a pride of lions - while tigers of opposite sexes don't normally fight over territory (solo female normally defers to male, male normally defers to female with cubs), they don't necessarily act like Ozzie and Harriet, either. The last thing we need, publicity-wise is for Mike VI to kill or seriously injure a girlfriend in the habitat because of a misguided attempt to superimpose the human experience on felines.

The best part of the Baton Rouge Zoo is the Relm of the Tiger exhibit near the entrance. Mike has all the company he might ever need, he just keeps them across town.

From Wiki:
Mike VI is a 5-year old Siberian-Bengal mix male currently weighing over 450 pounds. The product of an "unintended breeding" at Great Cats, University staff believe his youth, size and temperament may give the athletic department a "more ferocious mascot much sooner than watching a cub grow up at LSU." Estimates by LSU Veterinary staff are that Mike VI may top out at 600 lb (270 kg) or more, making him LSU's largest tiger mascot ever.

I wonder if they will consider bringing Mike to the game in NOLA? They used to take previous Mikes to the dome for games.

..I always thought that would be a good idea until I did a little research.

Tigers especially male ones, are solitary. For hunting purposes, it's more effective for them to be alone than have a group.

If you put two tigers together, there could be a serious fight. To have a problem in a small cage, would create a safety issue for the cats and everyone else.

Also, Mike is not a normal wild tiger. He really hasn't been exposed to other tigers since he was a cub. So, you really don't know how he will react.

everybody deserves a companion , right?

I have been trying unsuccesfully for 16 years. Maybe Mike will have better luck than I.

I'll put my name on a petition for Mike to get laid, regardless of how immature he is.
