Okay, for all of y'all coming out here for the first time, and for those who've asked a number of times over the past few weeks, here's some instructions on how to ride the metrorail in Los Angeles to the Rose Bowl. If you're not already on a bus coming from a hotel, this is the best way to avoid the HORRIBLE traffic that goes in and out of the Rose Bowl. First, you need to see what the rail system looks like.......................

Now, that you can see it, we can proceed.......

First, what you need to know is that there is ONE LINE that goes to Pasadena, the Gold Line. They recently re-named the lines with letters and whatnot but the COLORS of each line is still the same. The Gold line you will need to catch from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. There are a number of ways to do this.........

1. Drive to Union Station and park in their underground lot, which cost $8 per day (The underground lot is at the BACK of Union Station off Vignes Street, not the front off of Alameda St!)

2. Ride one of the lines that GO to Union Station, transfer there to the Gold line and proceed to Pasadena

If you choose the latter, the fare to rid is the same, as they don't charge you for each transfer, but your trip will take longer. From Union Station to Pasadena is literally around 30 min ride or less. If you ride the Expo Line, say, from Santa Monica or any neighborhoods near there, the total trip could take you more than an hour. Same if you are staying in Long Beach and take the Blue line. Either way, if you take any of those other lines to Union Station, it makes the trip longer. I generally drive to Union Station, leave my car there and then ride the Gold line. But, you'll have to make the call for yourself.

The fare for metrorail is $1.75 one way, $3.50 round trip. You can't beat it for the cost and convenience. Also riding the trains is easy, and the trains are generally pretty clean. Also, crime is not a major problem, especially riding to Pasadena. I've ridden many rail systems in the USA (Chicago, New York, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Bay Area, Houston), and LA's is one of the cleanest and safest I've been on.

Here's a link to show how easy it is to ride metrorail and how you pay your fares........

A Beginner's Guide to Metro

Now, once you're on the Gold line heading to Pasadena, you want to take it to the Memorial Park Station, and get off there. From there you will walk four short blocks to the Parsons Parking Lot B. At the lot there are free shuttles running from about three hours before game time, to the front of the Rose Bowl. At the end of the game, the shuttles take you back to the Parsons lot and run for about an hour after the game. When you get back to the Memorial Station for the Gold Line there may be a crowd. My suggestion is, since you're already in downtown Pasadena, hang out there for a bit to let the crowd die down, and then ride the rail back to Union Station.

Here's some more info about the shuttle and game day in general. Have fun and welcome to my hometown! Oh, and..............

Thanks. Metrorail a safe means of travel throughout LA?

Sorry, just saw you said crime isn’t a major problem.

It isn't.........................if you've ridden rail / subway systems in other major cities. I didn't say it was crime free. I said it's not a problem. I mean, if you're one of those people who are afraid of public transportation in general, then you might think it is. But, having lived in other cities with rail systems, LA is REALLY nice.

It’s relatively safe but filled with an abundance of homeless.

Meh, homeless people don't bother you if you don't bother them...........................like most people.

Here's some more information that was sent to me from the UCLA ticket office.....

-All who enter the Rose Bowl over age 2 WILL be required to wear masks

-The Rose Bowl has a clear bag policy.

-The Rose Bowl gates will open at 4 pm, although tailgating opens at 11 am

-During the game, former coach Terry Donahue will be honored (he passed away from cancer recently)

-LSU SoCal alumni will meet at Barney's Beanery in downtown Pasadena before and during the game.

Man the public transport here not easy to navigate for a newb. Had some LSU people on the same route as we were and they were struggling with it too. Drivers of buses are clueless and not helpful at all. Took forever from the Terminal to Union Station.

The filth here is astounding. I mean shocking. Been here before, but it looks like NYC in the late 70's plus homeless camps all up and down the interstates. Trash everywhere. Its the dirtiest city I have seen in the USA. Just atrocious.

Actually, aside from Atlanta, I've found it to be the easiest rail system of any cities I've visited or lived in. I assume you must be talking about the fares or TAP Cards? The map is pretty basic. When you say "from the terminal to Union Station", are you talking about a terminal at the airport? You took a bus from LAX?

Nah, signage at airport sucks. The driver fielded questions from a dozen people about paying, because unless you purchase online, you pay when you get to union station. Bus drivers are clueless and not helpful at all. The gold line listed has confusing signage, I guess they are changing the name and signage in the station was crappy.

I feel sorry for people who can’t enjoy the most beautiful state in the nation over politics.

Okay, you're talking about the FlyAway buses! At first I didn't understand what you were talking about. Yea, you should have gone on their website BEFORE you got to LAX. I had my parents take that bus as well and instructed them to purchase their ticket online so they wouldn't have to do what you just did...................wait in line at Union Station to buy a ticket for the ride you just took. But that bus has nothing to do with getting to the Rose Bowl on Saturday. Just follow the directions I left in the original post in this thread, and you'll be fine. You already know where Union Station is, so that's most of it. Just take the Gold line from there to Memorial Park station on Saturday.

Remember, for those of you driving to Union Station today, the $8 per day underground lot is in the back of the station, not the front on Alameda St.

While you're feeling sorry for me, point out ONE major US city run by libs for decades that is clean, low taxes, low homelessness, low crime, etc... So I can feel better. Thanks
