Right now there is some validity to that statement.
First, we have to beat Saban to win the SEC. Doesn't happen if we lose to Bama; at least in the current SEC West paradigm.
Second, we will continue to lose recruits to Bama if we cannot beat them, regardless of any titles we might achieve. Again, we are not going to win any titles if we don't beat Saban.
I don't think beating Saban and winning titles are mutually exclusive. The reality is we need to do both.

LSU just needs a win against Bama. It's why 2012 and 2014 hurt so much, starts to ingrain it mentally that no matter what you do, you can't beat Bama.
