Always when it may be a close game you wait till the 2nd half.
THIS could provide you one extra possession in the 2nd half..
All other arguments I've read in this thread why teams should defer (adjustments, cold/nervous start, injuries, etc) apply just as much to the opponent as to us.
It's all equal!! It's simply a matter of do you want to put your O or D on the field to start the game.

Always defer. You get a feel for the offense first and if you make that stop only good things can happen. The key to this is that if you get a three and out you have to get some progress on your first drive. But getting the ball in the second half helps

quote:I was thinking the same thing. The first cut is the deepest. We seem to swoon in the 3rd Quarter anyway and might be a wasted set of downs.
I say take the kick off and commence to kicking arse??????

yea, but if you don’t get that stop and your opponent scores, you’re behind from the start.

Always defer. 3 and out, punt, TD and you get the ball first 2nd half as well.
Put your best unit on the field first. And that’s our offense.

I always say do what you are best at. In our case offense so take the ball. Deferring seems to be working for us well, so I'd stick with that.

This came from Sean Payton philosophy. Always get ball to start second half. He tries to time it so he can score last in first half then first in second half. Came over with Brady. We didnt defer everytime last year.

You always defer because you have more information in the 3rd quarter than the 1st quarter. Not just information on how the opponent is defending you, but also more information on how the game is going, how desperate or not are you for points, do you need to be going for it on 4th down or kicking FG, going fast-paced or slow it down, etc etc etc.
Not to mention the 1st quarter is the least important quarter of a football game.
And the fact that it’s very typical for teams to start slow, especially in big games after an extended layoff as they “feel out” their opponent during the scripted portion of the game and settle in and move past the “nerves” portion of the early game.
You always defer if you win the toss.
That said, it’s a coin toss...it is what it is. The coin toss and whatever team’s decision to defer or take ball will not decide the winner of the game. But the correct football move is to defer if you win the toss and have the choice.

The main reason to defer is to set up two for one possessions going into and returning from halftime.
If you do that and take advantage your putting a ton of pressure on the opponent to keep up and change their gameplan.

winning the first half does not mean as much as winning the second half....
an opponent scores against you in the first quarter and you always fell you have time time recover.
NOT SO in the third quarter SPECIALLY if you had given the opponent the ball to start with and still led at half time.

It doesn’t make a bit of difference. We are going to out score Clempson from start to finish.

I get a kick out of the roar of big game crowds when the winner of the coin toss is announced.
It's like they scored a TD.
