So what you mean is that he throws about as well as JJ?

Not doubting you, but was he really that bad throwing the ball? Do you have any links or footage? (again, not doubting you just curious to see for myself)

Most of the footage I watched was from Scout and it had all the QB's rotating through throwing the same routes(JJ,JL,Shep,Garrett). Shep had by far the worst attempts at every type of pass on the route tree. His deep ball was non-existent. Even when you look at his HS footage, those balls do not look very deep. He is able to find open receivers because every team went all-in on stopping him from running. His run highlights were amazing.

JJ throws a beautiful ball. The problem is that a large percentage misses the target.

You are joking right....now JJ throws a beautiful ball? I guess I would much rather him throw ducks like Tebow and maybe throw for more than 100 yards than a beautiful ball with 50 yards passing.

I will never understand why JJ was not converted to a WR or TE and Shep made the dual threat QB. Shep just wasn't made for the position they tried to fit him into and they never got him the touches they promised him. Someone with his talent should get 10 to 15 touches a game. RR too. Hell, they even let Ware throw a couple of passes, why not Shep? He was the most wasted talent ever at LSU by far. JJ was the most overplayed disappointment I ever remember at LSU.

Les is a great recruiter, he is a great evaluater of coaching talent and sometimes he is a great game day coach. However, he generally sucks at player talent and position evaluation.

There is a difference in throwing a nice looking pass and throwing a pass that hits its mark. Payton Manning actually throws some ugly looking deep balls but they somehow can sail over 60 yards and hit a receiver in stride 9 out of 10 times.

one the most taunted athletes coming in and very little real development into any position."

That would be Lee in the latter part of the 2008 season.

there too....
since we are talking about what should have been...

a question.
Is our scouting flawed?
Is our development flawed?

It seems as if both need help, but which is the MOST flawed ?

I know it's not the same, but RSs HS highlights had him making some insane passes.

A lot of talk about bounce passes in the thread. I guess you guys have never seen JJ's famous screen passes. The guy couldn't hit anybody in stride if his life depended on it. I guess Less chose him as his go-to QB for so many years because he ran the option like only Tommy Frazier could.

It was pretty common knowledge when Shep committed to us that he did so in large part because our staff was the only one that promised him the chance to compete for the QB position. Most other schools (if not all of them) offered for him at WR. Those on the recruiting board pretty much agreed that our staff did so to land him, but that after a bit, he'd be converted to WR.

This

JJ has trouble hitting his target but he can throw deep and with velocity. Shep is strictly a runner.

This is an impossibility. Had Shep been coached up to be a QB from the moment he stepped on campus he would have been the starter.

Here's a simple truth people fail to accept: A person can LEARN to pass better over time. See: any quarter back with a long career.

The issue was JJ was NOT getting better, in fact, worse and Shepard saw this and began thinking "I am already better than this guy and I care"

Eventual result: Shepard leaves

That's why they are highlights.

JJ's highlights were pretty sweet, too.
