we aren't there depth wise. if you could guarantee team health we have a legit shot. But, as coach K knows, we will suffer hits to the depth chart. otherwise, it's just hard not to be excited about this team with multiple superstars on it.

Do you think Mulkey and Johnson thought they had a championship team leading up to year two? All it takes is something here, and something there, and boom, you're on your way. What was the expectation pre 2019? Nobody expected that ridiculous year except for maybe Burrow and a couple players.
What if everybody we've preached about being great actually put it together? Heard, Campbell, Jones on OL, the top 5 WRs, Taylor at TE and Pimpton, the loaded RB group, Daniels having that year two improvement that every transfer QB at LSU has had, Perkins being DPOY level, Spieghts and Ovie fitting right in, Maason Smith being All American, Saivion Jones being Sam Montgomery, Alexander dominating and ballhawking at corner, Sage Ryan's light coming on, Andre Sam being an enforcer at safety. We have the guys that could do all that.
Remember 2019. Breakout stars on offense and defense EVERYWHERE. The entire offense from QB down to center. Jacoby Stevens at safety, Vincent at nickel, Fulton and Stingley at corner, Chaisson at Edge, Queen at LB, and a stout DL that even with that one horrible Ole Miss game they had, they still finished 21st in the country in rushing. Funny thing is, if they rushed for half of what they did in that game (402 yards), we would have finished 11th in the country in rush defense).
Personally I think we can be a top 10 rush defense this year. If our guys live up to expectations as pass rushers and their talent in the secondary, we could finish top 25 in pass defense. Using last year's numbers, that would have given us the #12 total defense.

quote:Kelly has also said the starting unit is good enough to be anybody. The problem is depth in certain areas. We can't afford to lose a guy like Perkins or hell, anybody in the secondary. Losing Ovie or Saivion will destroy our good rotation at those spots too
Eighteen months ago, LSU was getting blown out by K State in the Texas Bowl with a WR playing QB, 39 scholarship players on the sideline, and a player personnel people coaching.
The Bama win has accelerated people's expectations. Last season could have looked a lot different, and folks would have a better perspective on where this program truly is. LSU would have lost the Arkansas game had KJ Jefferson been playing, needed a miracle to beat an awful Auburn team, and lost to the worst team A&M has fielded since joining the SEC.
Brian Kelly is the right guy for the job, so listen to him when he tells you the program isn't there yet.
With Lunsford, Martinez, and Heard, we can slot in a good replacement at any spot on the OL and even Emery Jones can play 3 spots. WR unit is deep, but losing Nabers would be harmful. Outside of him though, all others can be changed if needed. Taylor at TE is a must, but we at least have some EZ and blocking options that can be an effort to replace him. Daniels has Nuss as backup. RB unit is 8 deep. We had 3 RB average 5.4+ yards per carry last year, 4 RBs had at least 5 TDs, and 3 rushers total (including Daniels), had 8+ total TDs.

If this team can just have average secondary play, specifically at cornerback, then they will contend to be in the playoff.
But…we don’t know how good they will be. There are some red flags there for sure.

He is being honest. He’s in year 2 of what turned out to be a pretty sizable rebuild.
Last year was so above expectations that the timeline was accelerated in the eyes of fans. The state of the program may or may not have kept up with the expectations.
We’ll see. Whether we win Sunday and make the playoff or not, we’re still very comfortably on schedule.

If we are a year away with next year's schedule, we should be in good shape this year.

Brian Kelly’s best years at Cincy and Notre Dame were in year 3.
Cincy: 12-0
ND: 12-1
LSU will know after next season whether he is a great hire, or just a guy.
And you can’t compare rebuilds of the past. The no sit out transfer rule means expectations and reloads are much sooner. Anything less than that is fan copium

Im not sure your point here. Are you saying BK isnt also capable of winning a NC? Or are you just trying to white knight for Kim Mulkey in some strange way?
Neither. Why would I need to white knight for Mulkey lol. It’s just dumb to use the WBB team overachieving as a reason to set championship expectations for football this year.

Great seasons sometimes sneak up on fans that pay really close attention. We know all the perceived weaknesses we have. The only season that I can remember where we thought we were absolutely thought we were NC bound was 06 or 07. Even in 2011 we had a ton of question marks and most didn't think we had a good enough team to go undefeated and win the SEC. A ton of doubters in 2019. Hell even as the year went and Burrow was destroying everything in his path, a good portion of the fanbase didn't think our D would hold up.
