Now, first off, Jarvis Landry is far and away the best WR LSU has, and he may in fact be the best player on the team right now. He is just that good. He is tenacious, fearless, aggressive with the ball in the air, has excellent hands and route-running ability.

But, right now after him there is a big dropoff, and yes that includes Odell Beckham.

I've watched Beckham for 2+ years now and, while he is very good on special teams, he is below average as a WR with the ball in the air. He just doesn't have the It Factor for playing the ball in the air, adjusting, being aggressive, jockeying for position with the DB, catching at its highest point, etc. And in general he has average hands.

With Travin Dural now healthy and coming on in the X position, I would not be surprised if he starts being the target of those long throws we saw Beckham get Saturday. The only ball Dural missed Saturday was the one where he was mauled in the end zone. Still need to see more of him, but if he is as good as his rep, I think Dural will start to be a major player in the passing game at the expense of Beckham. It certainly won't be at Landry's expense.

Flame away.....

I don't agree with the huge drop off after Landry to OBJ

I know. Like I said, crack may be involved.

But, just think what his stats would have been if he'd had found a way to make a play on any of those long balls that fell incomplete.

I think where Beckham excels is short and mid-range routes where he can get the ball in space and use his juke-ability.

I agree that landry is by far the best we have. Want to see more of Dural, but I agree that hopefully he can become our deep threat.

He is very good with the ball in his hands, I just wish he would field more punts instead of letting them bounce.

jarvis is a phenom. he's been that way since highschool. after about week 3, you will hear the media start to label him as a "heisman watch" because of the offense we now run and the amount we target him.

odell is your all around 1st team all sec receiver.

All this is pretty much the opposite of what Beckham does.

OBJ makes some spectacular plays when the ball is in the air. He had one catch this past saturday that was one of the better catches I've seen a receiver make at LSU. He high points balls well and is aggressive in attacking them.

He's also the smoothest runner and best route runner on the team. There's a reason he is the WR that gets behind the defense. If he holds on to that deep ball that he had to reach back for slightly his stat line would have looked ridiculous.

He was not mauled and he definitely needs to hang on to that ball.

I agree with everything you just said. Been thinking the same thing myself. OBJ is very good at the things he does well, but catching the ball isn't one of them. Was hopeing that some other receiver was going to prove to be to good to keep off the field but it just hasn't happened. Thought that guy might have been Leslie but it seems he was a bit overhyped. Durel was supposed to be coming on and it still could be him. Haven't given up on Wright or Boone either, one of those two could take a big step forward.

You are insane. Go back and watch again. The drops he had were not exactly easy catches, and some of his catches were spectacular. There is no drop off at all.

Take away a couple of drops and we'd be drooling and talking about how we have some of the best receivers in the country. It's week one. Mett/Landry/ODB will develop chemistry over the next couple or weeks. Controlled practice is good, but they'll really learn to trust each other and learn each others tendencies in full speed, unscripted game time.

With Cam, the sky is the limit for Mett and the receivers this season.
