The LSU defense has talent. You can see it every Sat. The front 4 are run stoppers, linebackers are quality, and the back end can be stellar at times. We seem to "show up" for the big games and the last 2 weeks that has been proven against Ala. and Ole Miss in 1st half. For whatever reason we seem to fall apart in 2nd half. Same is true for Texas game and some others. 1st half - dominant. 2d half - NO show.... I know offensive coordinators make half-time adjustments and they find some tendencies or perceived weaknesses in the other teams defense. Here are a few things I've noticed w my strong grasp for the obvious. Let's get the Rantards fresh takes as well and get this defense back to elite championship caliber w our vast knowledge of what ails our Tigers. Should get confidence back against Arky!

1. Other team is using their 4th down to keep drives alive since they are behind multiple scores.
2. Injuries - especially in secondary (Delpit, etc.)
3. Giving up way too many BIG plays - bad angles, etc.

It’s really so simple. We have NFL players. You can break it down position by position and find nfl guys. Delpit, Stevens, Fulton, Stingley, Phillips, Chaisson, Lawrence. Those are just the obvious ones right now, the athleticism is there for 8-10 more guys. Problem is Chaisson should be a 4-3 DE and Lawrence should be a 4-3 DT. We lack another outside rusher. We have 3 guys weighing over 290 pounds in on 90% of plays. Simply put: they won’t get a consistent pass rush and a fast QB like Plumlee will humiliate them.

That’s where as a DC you have to figure it out. When we blitzed 5 or more against Plumlee he did absolutely nothing. Instead, we are running this read and react defense and we are soft as Hell. We have to get back to blitzing 5-6 players often. Aranda loves to do his MLB blitz while dropping Chaisson...it’s awful. We don’t have the DL to get pressure without blitzing. Why a 2.5 million dollar DC doesn’t know how to get pressure is beyond me. We have an offense that if you give up a big play on defense they can cover you. We should strive to create turnovers and force negative plays. Instead Aranda is soft and the defense takes after him mentally.

I think the coaches can do it and they likely know better than you.

Tell Joe Burrow to stop scoring in two plays so the defense doesn't have to go right back onto the field?

Against Ole Miss I would have run a five man front. The 5th player being Brooks/linebacker
Pinching in the front three, and outside guys first priority is outside contain.
This front also will work on passing downs if u drop into coverage enough to keep offense guessing.
Can bite u on the back end,but I tend to believe pressure is needed, and we need something to confuse offensive blocking schemes

To blitz or not to blitz... I say keep mixing it up. The idea of one or the other the vast majority of the time is the weakness exploited, not which one you do.

I say we're trying to use our DL too much and need to go back to basics of the 3-4 Bear.

If our LBs are engaging blocks, they aren't getting off of them allowing big plays. They shouldn't be engaging them that often, they should be cleaner to make plays.

Many times they aren't engaging blocks because they are either out of position in the first place, or because they ran out of position trying to dodge a block. Using the DL differently partially solves this also.

Using the DL to eat blocks also makes blitzes, particularly in the middle, run and pass, more effective when you choose to do it.

It is always at it's most base form a numbers game. Because one way to defeat the numbers game on the ground is to occupy 2 for 1, you start a play from an advantage when you have clean LBs.

ETA: speaking of eating blocks, why did we see more of Ika than Shelvin against OM? If injury and/or rest for the big(est) man, fine. If it was based on the theory that Ika was more athletic vs. a running QB we're approaching dumb levels (let's just call it 'over-thinking' since it is Aranda).

I wouldn’t overreact and over correct. It’s painfully obvious this defense was built to be heavy up front to compete with Bama and Auburn. Ole miss may be a shitty team overall but Plumlee and Ealy are elite running the zone read and Richrod is one of the best in the game at calling it. Not saying the defense is perfect by any means but making systematic changes to fix what they were able to do would be like chasing your tail. What needs to happen is Delpits ankle needs to get healthy and Brooks needs more reps to learn to be a 3 down player.

The truth is we are about to play the 11th game of the season.

And the problems on the defense have been present since the beginning.

At this point we just have to live with what we have in defense. It’s not getting fixed this late in the year.

Fortunately, we have an offense good enough to overcome the defensive issues.

As long as we don’t completely shite the bed, we should get in the playoff with a real shot to win it.

I think most of our issues are discipline and effort. Linebackers need to commit quicker and I’d love to see a more aggressive approach.

That said, the 3-4 is for the birds. It has bitten us in the arse just like it has Bama.

Bring back 4 quick, disruptive down linemen. Edge rushers that make shite happen in the backfield.

Wait this can't be true, I've read 30 times on here since Sunday that we "just don't have the horses" or "NO defensive coordinator in the country could do more with these players"...

As ususal, I believe the problem lies somewhere in between. We have talent and Aranda is not a bad coach. Aranda has strengths and weaknesses and some teams/matchups highlight that.

After witnessing Plumlee Saturday night and the Alabama big plays, we may need to play prevent defense the whole game. At least we might be able to delay the scoring.??

Yeah I’m sure y’all know more about defense than O, Aranda, Raymond and staff lol. I really hope O reads this board so he will know what to do with the defense the rest of the season.

Believe it or not, Coach Chavis's defense could have stopped the OM runs utilizing a contain D with disciplined players staying in position. It looked to me that our D was overly aggressive in the second half.

After LSU gets a big lead, the defense tends to relax and lose some of their focus, I.e. Texas Bama , Ole Miss. all big leads at halftime and a bit of a slump in the second half. Players lose some focus and the coaches may be a bit less aggressive. Not the worst problem to have cuz it means Tigers are ahead bigly. Also.there are some injuries at key positions that change the way the defense plays. I think they will be ok
