Saban took over a very talented football team when he came to LSU. DiNardo could recruit, but he lacked the ability to hire good coordinators because he micro-managed everything, but talent was not a problem when Saban arrived.

Nick is a great coach; maybe the best college coach in quite some time. But he had his rocky moments as well. I remember his LSU teams getting run out of the stadium quite a few times, but he has continued to get better and better as a coach. The good ones get better with experience.

Miles has improved a great deal with experience, and I hope he continues to do so. My biggest complaint is the lack of a passing game for the last four years. It simply has to get better.

Les Miles is better for LSU. He didnt jet at the first chance, and will continue to win games at LSU. I like the stability we have enjoyed.

It seems like every December there would be rumors that he was going to go somewhere else. In reality, maybe that was just the last few years but it was unsettling.

We should have given NS the world on its axis. I love SB, but he was NOT more valuable to LSU than the football program was. And now he's retired. We can most certainly recover, but to do so we have to beat a team with better coaching every single year. Not to sound negative, but I kinda have to question our priorities back in 2004.

Miles is a nut and a weird guy, and it looks like there will always be a giant monkey wrench that comes out of nowhere with him at the helm, BUT... c'mon, he is still 2 out of the last 3 against Saban. November 5th DID HAPPEN.

Despite what happened last Monday, I'm still glad Saban isn't here anymore. That guy is a giant a-hole, and I wouldn't want him representing my alma mater. Remember his perpetual snarky attitude toward the press and the fans. Remember his lies. Remember his low class moves, like voting OSU 4th.

This. Voting yourself in? Oddly, THAT'S when Bama won the National Championship. That was the 'close game'....a vote.

Just about any major college in the country would give their "left one" to have Miles for a coach

I really don't think this is true. I think most of the country feels we win the talent and coordinators. Most schools don't want Les.

Saban stubbornly kicking field goals and losing the first game vs Miles stubbornly playing jefferson and losing the second. Both are bad mistakes, but Miles' was an order of magnitude worse. It's amazing what goes through a coach's mind.

Miles was ready to bolt in '07 and had already had preliminary discussions with Michigan. LLoyd Carr for whatever reason didn't like Les and steered them to Rodriguez. The man is no better than Saban.

Saban is a defensive mastermind....he's not the best offensive guy.

I've now heard from two different Bama friends that Saban did not even speak to the offense or McElwain for two weeks during BCSNC game preparation. He focused soley on defense. There was no way in hell he was going to allow LSU to beat him again, as evidenced by the play of his defense Monday night.

To a degree, that makes me feel better ... given that much time and focus, Saban can shut down an offense (even one as potent as LSU!). It's also somewhat depressing knowing that Miles had nothing to counter what Saban put on the field.

bullshite. Anyone who says they'd rather have miles than Saban is either lying or has miles for a last name.

Fail. We shut ourselves down....watch the game. Had Saban lost, he was gone in a year. Think about this. If Miles owns Saban, even for a few years, 'the process' is a failure. Saban was fighting for his life. Miles....not so much. (look where we are now, and who's the coach). Miles' countering Saban's D was a non-issue. We only beat UGA for a half, Arky for a little longer.

Foward pass. It works. We lived on other team's offensive mistakes for a lot of the year. It dried up. We lived on positive emotion...it dried up.

Simple way to approach your question.

You're an AD at a major school. You need to hire a football coach. Money is not an object. You learn both Saban and Mile$ are interested and would say yes if you offered the job to either.

Whom do you select?

Honestly, no emotion from Monday, you would pick Le$ over Saban? Really?

If I'm the president of the university and you select Mile$ over Saban, I fire you on the spot.

and the 90s? My first LSU game was 58-3 loss to Florida.
I remember sitting in the stands for that...Everytime I really want to crank it on Miles or his program...I recall the excellence that was (in no particular order): Curley Hallman, Jerry DiNardo, Mike Archer.

The 90s were an era of seeing the best talent in LA play for the "U" or FL State, U of Spurrier, TN.

I hate this loss mostly b/c it looked like LSU tried the GA gameplan against a better team and expected a better outcome.

classy post. I do love Miles for his character but the coordinator thing I just cannot let go of right now.

were you even around when Saban was here? Do you not remember all the talk about Jimbo and how Saban needed a good OC? Man get lost with that.
