Attack" may be the key word

Defensively, you don't want to be too aggressive against a mobile qb because if your blitz is picked up,that mobile qb can run through the part of the field that the blitzing player left.

Also like a lot of safety blitz on mobile QBs.

What? You leave your wrs on an island with no over the top safety help and with Dak's ability to keep a play alive that's a recipe for big plays.

I rewatched the game yesterday and our defensive alignment was pure dog shite.

Exactly. Chavis did a terrible job.

This year we need to keep Beckwith in the middle at all times,

Yeah, I honestly believe we'll have a multiple possession lead early in the game, so keeping Beckwith alone in the middle won't hurt much since they'll be trying to pass often.
I think our secondary is too damn good to not have at least 6 or 7 in the box at all times.

I'm not saying both safeties on every play. Just saying when going after a mobile QB its better to use players with speed, but Dak being on the bulkier side, probably better to not use corners. Also after a few blitz start showing and backing out trying to make QB confused. Actually we had what 4 defensive plays against McNeese and the safety blitz was the best.

Another thing to note, in the last several years Mullen (aside from last year) would expose several flaws in our defense in a loss. Last year they obviously won.

I feel like Mullen has been the first coach we run across each year who exploits liabilities. It's really beneficial that he doesn't know our defensive tendencies this season.

Daniel Sam isn't Dak Prescott.

Hopefully when they go 5 wide we don't abandon the middle of the field this time.

It's hard to defend. Don't defend the pass, he's experienced enough to burn you.

Don't defend the qb draw, last year happens.

The best defense is a good offense. Control TOP and limit his touches. He's a great talent. We have to tackle him (extraordinarily hard to do)

I think we handle it though.

Best defense is scoring early and forcing them to play from behind. I can see our DEs pinning their ears back if we make them one dimensional.

Expect to see whatever Bama did all last season vs similar opponents.

That's a good strategy and I'm sure the middle linebacker position will be better manned this time around, but that was not our only defensive breakdown last year.

Yeah, well Beckwith didn't do too well last year when he was in the game, and Notre Dame ran roughshod over him, so no, Beckwith is not the answer.

As with all read option teams, the key is for your front four to play competent two-gap technique. Do that, and apply a little pressure with different light blitzes, and we'll kill them.

Our line was young and we had almost no developed backups. State's offensive line was experienced. This year we have a good dline and good backups, and State does not have as good of an oline. We should roll.

For those who watched the replay, is spot on. Our line was getting sealed up the middle or outright blown off the ball. LBs and DBs were missing tackles, all of them. MSU matched us hat for hat and LSU didn't answer. They kicked our arse plain and simple. We know what they are going to do Saturday. I hope like hell we can stop it.

Between having Beckwith starting and their O line down, I don't think Dak has the same kind of year at all.

I was watching some 2014 highlights the other day and its going to be important to get some pressure on Prescott. Whether its the d-line breaking through or bringing men on the blitz, somebody has got to get in his face.

One thing I noticed is that he doesn't like to go down with the ball. He'll do what he can to get the ball out instead of taking a sack and it sometimes results in poor throws when he probably should have just eaten it. I think the defense can force him into a mistake or two.

Go back to the thread about the DE's and remember how many times they were nowhere to be found when DAK cut inside of them for wide open spaces. That maybe why we are seeing so much going on with DE's right now. Steel and O can watch the film and see what happened. It also helps that KB is at middle linebacker.

I went back and watched the game last night. That was some of the worst defense I have ever seen LSU play. Not just schematically, but from a fundamental ability to tackle.
