QB is about the only position where you can get demonstrated success in the portal. There are 21 other positions.

You can’t count and don’t know what percentages mean. It’s ok but don’t blame me, your parents failed.

Yeah it was sarcasm.

Ahh, I gotcha. My bad.

We have an offensive coordinator that was promoted solely because he was a good quarterback developer and he had the #1 quarterback in the country committed. Now the #1 quarterback isn’t coming here and our solution is to get quarterbacks that are developed elsewhere. Great OC hire for BK.

You’re not wrong, necessarily. But there’s a little more nuance. Sloan is a very well respected QB coach AND recruiter, especially in Louisiana. Not just because of Underwood. I live in NLA, and he was very popular as a member of Holtz’s staff at Tech. He had supposedly developed tons of relationships all over Louisiana at just about every important high school in the state. I mean, that’s no doubt the biggest reason BK hired him in the 1st place.

And he did call plays at Tech for 1 year, so he had done it before. And even though their offense wasn’t great that year, I think they either dealt with injuries or something. For whatever reason, they didn’t seem to have as much offensive talent as they have had, and he was kinda given a pass and Holtz got the blame.

And I agree with you that you don’t make hire an unqualified—maybe unproven is a more fair word—hire just for 1 recruit. But apparently Underwood isn’t just any old recruit. He’s supposed to be special, even for the #1 guy in his class. And BK didn’t want to lose his recruiting of other other players too.

And after the season Jayden had last year, I don’t think Sloan comes back to be QB Coach again. He was gonna get some pretty good OC offers most likely. Hell, a month ago, I was scared Tech was gonna offer him their HC job, and it could hurt us with Underwood. Oops.

So BK is in a pickle, not wanting to lose Sloan and probably Underwood with him. I had never heard this until Moscona started telling it this week, but apparently, Denbrock didn’t want to leave. At 1st. But BK told him he was gonna make him and Sloan co-OCs. And after the historically good offense Denbrock had just put together that produced the Heisman Trophy winner and 2 future 1st round WRs, Mike told Brian to basically kiss his arse.

So Kelly could promote Sloan to the play-calling OC (and make Hankton co-OC) in order to hang on to him and hopefully Underwood or he could go out and get a more experienced OC, who may not run his system, and likely lose Underwood.

So he gambled on Sloan, hoping he could have his cake and eat it too. And sure, some weren’t sold on it, but a lot of us were willing to take that risk at the time. Cause what if Sloan turned out to be a really good OC?

Now, it wound up blowing up in his face. Ran Denbrock off, Sloan’s not ready, and then the final kick in the balls, we lost Underwood 2 weeks before NSD, and in the midst of a 3-game losing streak when vibes and confidence in Kelly and the program are extremely low. Sucks for us fans, sucks for the players, sucks for BK, but really sucks for Sloan. Thursday had to be the worst day of his professional career by far. Probably had a nice talk with his agent about upgrading the ol’ resume, because I think he’s fired by a week from Monday.

Again, none of it worked, and Kelly’s gotta wear it. But none of those decisions in and of themselves were all that crazy at the time. They were just gambles. Gambles that could have really paid off big if they all hit. But none of them did, we lost Underwood, our offense is embarrassingly bad (at actually putting the ball in the end zone, at least), and it’s the lowest time in Kelly’s short LSU tenure. Sucks bad.

But, the sun will rise. BK’s gotta hit on a new OC—even if he’d rather keep Sloan, I think he has to sacrifice him at this point. You can have a disappointing 1st year. But you can’t go from a top 5 offense in the country to one that looks like they’ve never played football before in just 4 weeks. And combining that with “losing” the highest ranked recruit in LSU history (even though there’s nothing he could have done), and you gotsta go. But hit on the OC, either bring Nuss back (which could take more NIL than some think, considering the poor QB class this year) or go get a talented/dynamic QB in the portal—or both if the transfer has more than 1 year of eligibility—add the Underwood money to the rest of the portal pool, and supplement the roster with the best combination of multiple impact starters you can afford. (I’m actually pretty concerned about the WR position right now. Especially if either Daniels or Anderson declare. Or both. I don’t think there’s much chance Sampson will be back—or do anything even if he does—Parker seems like he’ll be good, but more of a really dependable 3 or 4 kinda guy—and Watkins is a 5’9” track guy. He’ll make a few big plays in his career, but he’ll never be a #1. I’m not sure this team has a true #1 for next year already on the roster unless Billiot makes a jump. But with the injuries we’ve had there, I’d think a future #1 would have been able to get some run this year. Those dudes don’t stay in college 5 years).

Sorry, I’m rambling. This probably should have been 3 or 4 different posts, but I keep stopping to watch this Florida/Ole Miss game. Go Gatahs.
