With all of the fans turning on JJ, how quickly we forget that this team was 38-25 last year and 13-17 in SEC. We barely snuck into a regional as a fricking 3 seed and got shipped to Oregon. Not to mention, we lost an all-sec starter and another quality SEC starter. We were 6th in the SEC in hitting. We constantly bitched on here (for 3 years) how much PM’s teams had trouble hitting the ball and scoring runs.

Minus our top 4 bats, everyone is giving this roster way too much credit. Our pitching staff is a bunch of bullpen guys and guys coming off injury.

I’m not saying it’s been pretty baseball so far, and that I am not disappointed in the play on the field. But let’s not act like Jay is taking over the 1997 roster.

Yeah, I don’t get why people were expecting Omaha.

It’s the same team as last year, with worse pitching.

Now, critiquing his in game decisions should be allowed 100%.

Solid post. He's in his first year and struggling with pitching and fielding.

Things will definitely get better.

I think a lot of people forget how bad this team was last year just because they won a regional

They sucked hard

He’s gets a pass for THIS season.

If we lose twice to La Tech and start off 1-2 at home in the SEC against a shite team like A&M again next year, god help him.

Except for the fact that we brought in an All-American and all those true freshman last year are now sophomores with another year under their belt. There is plenty of talent on this team. Hopefully they can put it together.

Honest question, where in his past as the head baseball coach do you get the idea that fielding will improve? All the metrics say that that is completely false and his teams are always below to very subpar out in the field.

I'm sorry but that is blind unsubstantiated faith

I was expecting hitting to be a little better. I know the numbers say we are a great hitting team, but with our pitching staff we needed to be an elite hitting team. I thought we were capable of gorilla balling our way to being a top team.

I was wrong so far.

I agree with your post. Our biggest issue even though defense sticks out the most is pitching. Dominate teams have 3-4 starters. We don't have that right now and until we do we will not be in the upper echelon of the SEC or the country. I will give Jay the benefit of the doubt for this year and maybe next after that its a trend. It will take next year to bring them in and start developing them unless he gets them from the portal.

I guess the other side is thinking it will not improve, or get worse?

Might be some hope, but he may try a different lineup if things don't improve, which in itself may create some improvement?

It's a very LONG season.

JJ is one month into his first season, coming off a pretty bland year.

Anyone panicking deserves to be laughed at.

We had returning first team all Americans last year? Sounds like excuses to me.

Panic? No. But you have to have your head in the sand if you aren't concerned by the early returns.

The defensive play with almost the exact same position players (minus Z. Arnold) has been alarming. Like historically bad. They proved they could perform better last season. Is it mental? I don't know.

I give him a pass on the mound, as the pitching cupboard was pretty bare. Would have liked to have seen him bring in at least one transfer capable of starting on the weekend. He did not. PM at least had Landon M. last year.

Hitting has been about as expected so far.

Unless there is significant improvement on the mound and in the field this team won't reach 13-17 in the league like last year. Everyone's expectations were that they would be at least a little better than last year with all the position players returning.

I agree with this completely. The fielding is a definite concern and the current staff shoulders that.

I also feel like everyone thinking Omaha this year was a huge reach. I wanted to point out that we were not good last year with a similar lineup and much better pitching.
