Alleva has given him an industrial size spool of rope. The man has NO FEAR for his job. He'll sit back & follow the Les Miles coaching strategy; live off of the lone CWS title, continue to hire his buddies & graduate assistants as coaches, not develop pitchers, make bone headed offensive decisions, keep people in the lineup who don't produce & not give other players a chance to perform, & rely on the defense. He's here till he wants to leave & that will be in 2024

Smoke's downfall was brought on by his alienating the big baseball donors.

He was quoted as referring to them as "the enemy" and they abandoned him.

Skip could not ignore the donor dollars leaving......

This team just doesn't have it........We've sacrificed power but our speed has not made up for it this year.
NCAA might have pulled the chair from under his small ball recruiting strategy with flat seams and he's been too slow to counter-adjust. (Although I do recall NCAA deemed it an "experiment".)

Personally I don't think he's that adept at calling small ball, judging bunts and steals.

How bad does it have to get to override the 09 championship?

Probably not making the NCAA tournament two consecutive seasons.

I don't think it would have to be consecutive. 2 out of 3 years probably.

Possibly. But if the in-between year includes a trip to Omaha, then no, that won't do it.

Two seasons ago Arkansas went to Omaha.

Last season the Piggies didn't even qualify for Hoover after getting SWEPT in 6 of their 10 SEC series. (Just think what would happen here if LSU got swept in 6 SEC series!)

This season, they are currently tied for second overall in the SEC standings.

I'm sure there were Piggie fans calling for Van Horn's firing last season.

the defenders are saying you don't fire mainieri because:
1. he's won a lot of regular season games, i.e. national seeds
2. none of the coaches with better cws records are leaving for lsu
3. none of the other coaches with better cws records could do better in the sec

obvious responses:
1. elite teams are measured by the postseason, not the regular season. hanging your hat on national seeds is beta talk.
2. no one knows this and no coaching search is conducted that way. if that were the case, no coach would ever get fired for non-scandal reasons
3. false. 2 coaches in the sec (and one just retired) ARE doing better at the cws than mainieri. as for non-sec coaches, no one knows that they wouldn't do better.

Alleva gave him all the rope he needed with his last contract. If anyone at LSU wants a blockbuster contract, they have to just take a page from the Miles/Mainieri playbook and have their agent plant a news story that they are being called to interview elsewhere.
