It was a zone coverage call where stingley had the flat and burns had that deep third. Burns blew his coverage. It's very simple.

There are different versions of zones. You’re saying three, the tv guy said four, it looked like two in the moment to me. In two and almost every version of four, the corner will squat on the out move (Stingley), and the safety will have deep half or man on the deep receiver in four. I didn’t see three at all unless it was rolled, and it would be dumb, imo, to roll three TO your best corner, pushing him to the flats. In practically every scenario, Burns blew the coverage.

Raymond was talking to Stingley on the bench like it he blew the coverage and Stingley's body language was not very positive. Lots of head shaking from Raymond and even put his head down in his hands exasperated a few times.

Purely anecdotal observed from behind the bench that may just be how they interact during the game but it was noticeable.

Stingley released coverage to the deep 3rd safety. Safety was out of position.
was supposed to be in quarters coverage though

Based on what? Burns was the only player out of position on the play.

Stingley was covering the receiver in the flats. Burns was occupying the deep zone already covered by the other safety instead on occupying the deep zone where the receiver was uncovered. Burns was the only one playing quarters coverage.

Exactly. I wasn't trying to get too technical i was just trying to point out that it was Burns' area of the field on that particular play. Whether they were in 3, 2, or 4.

On that particular play it looked like a 3 as Ricks dropped back pre snap and Lewis and Burnes were both staying back. It might have even been a true cover 4 prevent play (which i doubt) because the OLB on the play started to play the flat.

Either way, it's hard to say "X allowed a catch!" on a zone like that because it's deep coverage zone where at a certain point you're just trying to keep the receiver in front of you.

Admittedly, I didn’t see what the backside corner and safety did. I was pretty deep in the beer by then. My comment was based purely on the actions of Stingley and Burns.

I think we’re on the same page, though.

Stingley absolutely set the tone for the defense saturday. Ive given stingley shite for his ucla performance, but he definitely showed what he can do against central michigan. When he plays like that the rest of the team fed off of it, they looked like monsters out there.

I completely agree. He deserved a little bit of flak for that play vs UCLA because of his position on this team, but in true Rant fashion, people went off the deep end over it. Stingley has still been great overall and he absolutely lead by example on Saturday.

On the play in question, LSU rushed 4 and dropped 7 in what appears to be cover 3. Burns was looking to his left presnap at the TE who was lined up on the offense's right side. Burns eyes never left the TE who ran a vert right at Lewis who was playing the backside safety. Clark had short middle and passed the TE off to Lewis as he went deep. For some reason Burns seemed to think the TE was his responsibility and ran to double cover him with Lewis never even glancing at the WR racing up the sideline. Stingly and Baskerville squatted in the flat with Sting picking up the RB and Baskerville looking towards the approaching crosser. Hard to believe that wasnt a screwup on Burns.
