LSU plays in the SEC and not the Sunbelt, man. There have been lots of really good SEC football teams who finished at 5-3.
If it's so tough that a "really good" team can only go 5-3, then it should be too tough for any team, let alone two teams, to go 8-0.

It takes a lot of luck to have a 10 win season.
Not really. In an era when you play 13 or 14 games, 10 wins will barely get you in the top 10. In fact, our 10-2 team in 1996 didn't finish in the top 10.
When you play mostly cupcakes or mid-tier teams outside of the conference, just breaking even in the SEC and winning a minor bowl game can get you nine wins, so 10 isn't all that spectacular.

I've gone to every home game since I was 7 in 1998, and I think I went to a few before that. I don't remember much of 98, but I have vivid memories of the 99 season from start to finish. I remember after winning the first two games I though LSU would destroy Auburn and was disappointed when they didn't. I remember starting the Ole Miss game with a kick return for a touchdown (at least I think that's what happened) and again being disappointed when we lost. The Arkansas win at the end of the season is still one of my favorite games I went to in Tiger Stadium just because I finally got to watch the Tigers beat an SEC team.

I was in the student section for a few games when I was in middle school.

I went to the LSU-Florida game in 1997 at 7 years old.
Still remember everyone rushing onto the field after the game. Was hooked ever since

My first game in TS was in early '83, but didn't start going regularly until '88 when I started school there. I work out of town so much that I can only make about 1-2 games/year, with one of them being an away game. I will be in the GA dome on September 4th though. Flying from Chicago for the game, and my wife and two boys are driving up from MS.

There are two different types of posters on this board.
One doesn't want a return to the 90s and sees Miles as the catalyst to such a downfall.
The other is happy that the program is CURRENTLY not in the same state it was in the 90s.
Age doesn't make a difference.

quote:I don't think the program would fall to that level under Miles, but that doesn't mean I think he is an elite coach. You left out a segment of the LSU fan population. There are PLENTY who consider Miles an 8-4/9-3 type coach, and are NOT happy about that. I wouldn't be either if I thought that's all he was capable of, but I don't mind that being the bad seasons...with some 10+ win seasons for the most part. That's what I think he is. Occasionally, I think he'll have the Tigers in the SECCG, and occasionally, I think they'll win. If so, the chance for a BCSNCG exists every few years. I'm OK with that.

And it has nothing to do with my age, or how long I've been following the Tigers, or the 90s.

Nice post. The benefit of going to games since the sixties is perspective. I really believe many negaTigers on here don't even remember the bad years of Texas in the nineties, So.Cal in the eighties and nineties, the dynasty of Nebraska in the early nineties then their fall from grace.... so many examples. They only know of Notre Dame as a mediocre team, have no idea that Fla. State is relatively new to football.
LSU Football is a way of life. We have had horrible times, good times and mediocre times. I went to LSU from 1973-1980. I call that the worst seven years combined in LSU Football history. The last two years of Archer and the four of Hallman came close, but at least Archer was decent in his third year and Hallman beat Bama in 93 breaking their 17 game winning streak. Do they recall the "Pigs can fly" game?
Losing to Bama from 1971 to 1981 was horrible! Stovall's 1982 win at Bama, caused Bryant to start thinking retirement and grown LSU men cried with joy. Beating Bama in three out of four years with one tie in the mid 80's was a mile stone that was hard to believe till the early part of this decade.
This year is a time of reflection. Too much emphasis has been place on the last two years especially since they ended on 8 and 9 win seasons.
I will agree that one more 8-9 win season would depress me and may be enough to cause me having concern about the coaching.
We should be thankful.
