I’ve actually heard people say that Jimmy Taylor was a better RB than Cannon. Cannon was faster and the better athlete but Taylor had more shiftiness.
You should probably hear different people. Shiftiness??? GTFO.

He was fast but I call BS on all these people saying he ran a sub 10 sec 100 yard dash. Check out that official running stride for stride with him on the punt return.
I would imagine playing with 10-15 lbs of sweat soaked equipment in the fourth quarter in a humid atmosphere may have had an effect, but nevertheless, you’re a dumbass.

False. Training methods, programs, supplements, etc. were nowhere near what it is in modern day football.

9.4 100 yd...I'm late to the party

I was at a track meet at LSU when Billy Cannon ran a wind aided 9.2 which would have been a world record at the time for 100 yards. They didn't run meters back then at SEC track meets.
He beat the Styron brothers and then would win the shot put.

If he would start in today's game then he truly must have been a man against boys in that era.
You would be correct in assuming that, but just as Fournette did not run for a touchdown every time he carried the ball, neither did BC. Why you ask??? Because football is competition and everyone is gunning for the stud. What really helped LSU in '58 and '59 was having Cannon, Robinson, and Broadnax in the same backfield.
I have seen all, in person, of LSU's great tailbacks. From J. Taylor to Guice and without hesitation I will tell you that no one would beat him out of a tailback slot. One of the most gifted with the quick speed coupled with power you would want to see. Hard to argue against Fournette, but I know where my money would be.
Not to say the best tailback to ever play football, but give him an injury free career and he would have been a top 10 all time in IMHO.
PS: Never forget, he played 1st team offense and defense.

He was just a freakish country boy.
He was also training under one of the best weight trainers of the era, actually one of the first programs training "runners" to gain power lifting muscles...Alvin Roy if I remember correctly?

Well frick. Dammit 777. Still a cool saying and very applicable to Cannon as well even if not actually leveled at him by Bum.

Great photo from '59 track meet. That appears to be Don "scooter" Purvis in the other LSU jersey?

He also punted (believe may have place kicked)
Cannon had very good agility; started at gaurd on high school basketball team.
Great athletic talent.

Cannon was not only the best athlete I ever saw but also the most ferociously competitive.
This x100. I was just a kid watching him from SW end zone corner...my memories of watching him take a handoff on end runs and cut up ield are branded in my memories. Linebackers would hit him and just get bowled over. I can not for the life of me recall seeing anyone take him one on one on such a run...put that head down...bring it on...other occasions, just give 'em a nod and cut the opposite way. My dad's buddy who played college ball as a running back in the late 40's would at time accompany us...his descriptive term was "legs like pistons and a body of steel"...something like that.
...marvelous I say!

He's got Dalton Hilliard thighs

not sure on any of your questions, but the very available photo HS photo of him in his track uniform is pretty unreal. the guy was not just lean but really bulky too. im not around HS kids much but pretty sure not many of them are that jacked

Correct on both counts as well as extra points.
Lived in Tyler the entire decade of 70's...loved it there!
