LOL at the guy bitching about the basketball team, but he doesn't know who Ralston Turner is.

quote:
1. Brady left TJ with a talented, but upperclassmen laden team and a very poor signing class to work with. This resulted in a successful first year, but a major roster overhaul in subsequent years.
2. The high school basketball talent in Louisiana has been in the worst 3-year stretch I have seen in 25-plus years. This coincides with Trent Johnson's first 3 years at LSU. This should not be understated. Brady lived and died with local talent. He
had 4 SEC freshmen of the year, all from Louisiana.
3. Trent Johnson, no doubt with the knowledge and approval of Joe Alleva ( who hired him), has insisted on building a stable, long term program. He has avoided JUCO players and other short-term solutions. Love or hate Brady, but his tenure was a rollercoaster. It's obvious TJ and Alleva want stability.
Agree or disagree, but this is the way it is. Regardless of anything you may think, TJ has a 5 year window to build this thing back up and is fully supported by his bosses. That said, I expect LSU to be an NCAA team next year and compete for the conference title in 2013.
Agree with this.
And Sheep already pointed out that the majority of Brady's "great" recruits were placed in his lap by Collis Temple.
And on TJ recruiting, as Bubba mentioned, this has been a rough stretch in LA talent these last few years. But it's not like TJ hasn't gotten who he's wanted from within the state. He's bringing in a top recruit next year from Miss and the talent in LA should be better over the next couple of years. Expect our team to get much better in the next couple of years.

What do you see from this team that makes you think they can compete with Florida or Kentucky?

two very good players coming in to join this bunch.
People said that last year about Malcom White and Stringer. And White hasn't been good at all IMO.
I'm all for giving TJ a five year window and this team may even be decent in four years. I just don't see where the optomisim is coming from. This team is just plain bad right now.
First of all they're starting two freshman guards who show much promise. Other than leading the team in scoring both Turner and Stringer have displayed the type of fearlessness you look for in college freshman but rarely find. LSU has had their share of great freshmen and these two guys fall into that mold IMO. White is showing some rust from two years out of action but he's also shown some toughness. Green is the biggest surprise on the team, as proven by his battling the NBA-sized frontcourt of WSU the other night. Both Memphis and WSU will be in the big dance come March and LSU very nearly upset both of them. I've seen the Isaac kid coming in next year and he already has the physical toughness you need in an SEC guard. O'Bryant is a 5* and does look on film like the type of kid you normally see Calipari land. The Tigers also have a big gu transfer from the midwest coming in next year who can bang inside. As for KY and UF, both programs are currently a notch above LSU but Florida has lost to two teams that are in the Nicholls/CC class recently. KY will lose multiple one and dones again this year and sooner or later they'll have a down year playing that game. The jury is still out but I stand by my predictions that the team will get to 17 wins this year and will contend for not only the West but the conference next season. Time will tell.

So, basically.... one quality player (Randolph) in Brady's entire tenure (though I guess you could count Stromile, as well...) that Collis Temple didn't hand deliver to LSU.
Pretty damn impressive recruiting, if you ask me.
Did the guy not have a car? Did he have to take the bus to recruit around BR?
I notice you glossed over the stellar recruiting years of Brian Beshara, Brad Bridgewater, JuMichael Young and Xavier Whipple
The comment was related to Brady’s last few years. Had I gone back further I could have included Stromile Swift, Jabari Smith, Ronald Dupree, Lamont Roland, Darrel Mitchell, Antonio Hudson, Jaime Lloreda, Jermaine Williams, Collis Temple III most of whom are not from Baton Rouge.
What the hell difference does it matte where they are from? If there is a talented player in BR then the LSU coach should be recruiting him. Should he have just passed on the BR kids and pursued out of state talent? If so,why??? I am sure national recruits were beating down the door to sign with an LSU program that had gone through four straight losing seasons under Brown. Then there were two more in Brady’s first two seasons while going through NCAA investigation which led to draconian sanctions.
It is amazing to see the passes extended to Trent Johnson by the same people who vilify Brady and lump all ten seasons as though he inherited a normal situation. The program Brady left Johnson was light years ahead of what Brady inherited.
It was in the best interest of Brady and LSU to part company, but Brady has never really gotten the credit for what was accomplished under his leadership. If any serious LSU fan had been told in March of 1997 that a coach would be hired who in the next decade would take a team to the Final Four and a Sweet 16, recruit three SEC champions and coach two of them, and also four SEC West champs that fan would have asked what will it cost to sign that coach?
Trent has come in under far different circumstances with a different plan. Everyone needs to support him and let his players and program develop and hopefully he will exceed Brady, Brown and any other coach in LSU history

FYI, I was using John Brady's son's (or whoever that poster is) list to go off, as his "golden beacon" of the Brady years.
Which, without Collis Temple II, would have been a one and done year of Anthony Randolph, and who? Terry Martin? Regis Koundjia? Ross Neltner?
Were there some good players that came through the program in the Brady years? Sure.
But there was also a D-1 team worth of talent that Brady ran off. Instead of building powerhouses, he was playing Bobby Knight, only without the actual coaching ability.
Please list that D-1 team of talent that Brady "ran off" and also list their accomplishments at their new schools.

I like them, but they strugle at times and look to be D. Mitchell type of players.(And I love D.Mitch) Solid and get better over time, but not stars. I really have no complaints about Stringer and Turner.

White is just plain soft. I haven't been impressed with him at all and he doesn't look like he has any offensive moves.

I think the surprise is how bad White and Storm are playing and the fact that Green is out playing them.

I haven't heard much about him, so I'll have to take your word on it. How much will he play behind Stringer and Turner though?
quote:
O'Bryant is a 5* and does look on film like the type of kid you normally see Calipari land.
Word on O'Bryant is that he is lazy and has gained weight and that's why the big time programs have backed off of him. IMO though, he's got to be better than what we have down low now though.

We said the same thing about M. White last year.

This team isn't that good. We stand at 8 wins right now and if we beat Southern, Rice and North Texas, we will be at 11 wins. That means we have to win 6 conference games and that puts us at 6-10 in the SEC and 17-15 overall. That's not very good.

College basketball has been ruined by the NBA. It started going down when Kevin Garnett and Kobe skipped college. The entire talent pool is watered down and there are too many college basketball programs. Also, the athlete of today is typically a frontrunner. He likes to play on a winning team so all of the talent seems to assemble at the top programs.
all schools have to deal with the same..
you can only have 10 players on a team (+ or_)
there is plenty of talent
no excuse

Can't argue that Green is outplaying Storm and White and it is surprising. Green will be getting more PT I imagine. Turner is the best jump-shooter I've seen at LSU since Henderson, strictly speaking of freshmen. Could wind up being as good as DMitch and MT were by their Sr years. Isaac's game is much like Dotson's is now. Explosive first step and goes hard to the rack. He's about 6'3" or 6'4" with a very solid build, maybe 210 or 215#. Constant movement on both ends of the floor. Have seen him dunk over 6'7" opposing center. He will not beat out any of the three guards currently starting but may advance past Derenbecker and Bass for PT. Derenbecker is a much better shooter than he's shown thus far fwiw. The two big guys coming in next year, Hamilton and O'Bryant will lend the kind of size that several SEC schools do not have, when grouped with the guys already on board. The team has won only 7 games, and North Texas will not be a gimme for #8 tomorrow night.
As for 17 wins I agree that's not very good considering the west is down but that is what I predicted. The 20-win seasons will start rolling next year IMO. Hey, if I'm wrong it won't be the first time.

i like how people act like collis temple was the only reason these guys went to LSU. like it's so abnormal for people to go to a major school that is extremely close to their hometown without someone 'hand delivering them.'

Some folks need to learn how college recruiting (and particularly college basketball recruiting) works, how it relates to AAUs, adidas/Nike camps, etc.
It's a big ole world out there, folks.

It's not a bad thing at all, but having Big Baby and Tyrus Thomas didn't hurt Dmithch.
I'm saying we don't have a Glen Davis or Tyrus Thomas.

That being said, it's way to early to start talking about getting rid of TJ.

Suppose we have a losing season. Is that acceptable in both Yrs 2 and 3?
Nothing we can do but those who say LSU basketball always sucked have a short memory.

I understand youth, growing etc. I understand that Trent didn't have a great hand dealt to him, but a college basketball program is not a hard one to resurrect, generally. Young players contribute significantly immediately to programs all across the country.
We aren't doing well on the recruiting trail (solid to very good class last year), and that's the backbone of any team.
I didn't expect us to contend for the SEC last year or this year... but losing to teams like Nicholls etc. is really pretty unacceptable... and I'm not sure why TJ gets a pass for it from many.
And I don't like Brady either.
I guess my biggest qualm is that besides give a tremendous opening press conference and coach a team of players he didn't recruit to modest success... what exactly has he done to even illustrate he's "rebuilding" the program?

Freshman and sophomores are scoring 69% of our points
Freshman and sophomores are playing 69% of our minutes.
I don't know what else to tell you if you can't see that this team is young and learning to play together as a college team. Call it bullshite or whatever but some of you are going to be surprised.
