Les hasn't exactly had too many steady years as far as assistants.

saban is criticized for this all the time

quote:

he & Jimbo didn't get along

we had to keep jimbo for consistency in the program. miles knew what he was getting into when he signed up

Then Bo got the Nebraska job,

i think bo stayed longer than everyone believed

quote:

then Mallory/Peveto

100% miles' fault for making a horrible hire/promotion

let's not also forget miles pissing off karl dunbar

but of course saban is the only coach who made bad hires or couldn't get along with assistants, right tigertap?

Les is a good coach, Larry just had a good team... you can't compare the two. Les had a 2nd string QB (matt flynn) when we played UM... we still kicked their azz on and off the field. ( hint - fight in locker room when we sent players to hospital)

You don't wait until game 11 to think about this. MILES frickED UP by NOT using JJ in earliar games.

How many wins does he HAVE TO HAVE this year?

As always, there's no set number. It all depends on how the games go, what happens during the season. What if Auburn and Arkansas have surprise breakout seasons and go 10-2, while Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia and Florida all have their expected great years? We could lose four or five out of those six, but be really competitive in all of them, and that would be a pretty good showing. What if we have a terrible rash of injuries? There are so many variables that you can't predict, so it's unreasonable to set a number in advance and say you have to win that many regardless of what happens.

quote:

how many does he have to have to keep the recruiting strong and not get the image of Larry Coker?

Recruiting isn't going to depend a whole lot on how many games he wins. We recruit well no matter how we do in the previous season. As for his image, that too is controlled by factors mostly unrelated to how many games he wins. Hell, he won the national championship in '07 and still had the image of a half-crazed lucky SOB living off the recruiting of his predecessor. Whatever media idiots say will probably have a lot to do with his image, and they manifest their stupidity in strange and unpredictable ways no matter how the person in question performs. So, again, no set number.

For what it's worth, I think we'll win more than last year, in spite of the much tougher schedule we're playing this year. If I had to guess, I'd say 9-3 or 10-2 in the regular season with a loss to Florida and either one or two of Ole Miss, Alabama and Georgia. If it's 10-2 with losses to Florida and Georgia, then I'd say we'd have a decent shot at winning the west. If we do that, it'll be perceived as a very successful season.

I don't buy the Coker comparison though. They may have taken over programs that were stocked. They may both be nice guys. They may both be offensive-oriented coaches but that's about it.

it's mainly about being a "program stepfather"

miles is a better stepfather than coker b/c he recruits better and is a better CEO

but even if Miles goes 10-2 this season, there'll still be morons ... who couldn't lead a pee wee team thru warm-ups...critiscizing the shite out of him.

Of course they will.

When you take a job in the SEC, that's what you're gonna get and all the guys who take these gigs know that coming in.

Miles doesn't project well because of his relatively poor interviewing and speaking skills and I think he has to win maybe a little bit more than many of his contemporaries to overcome the image he projects.

At the same time his likeability also engenders fierce loyalty from some fans and the need to vigourously defend him seems to be very strong and almost personal among this group.

And this will continue to play out as long as Miles is here, whether we like it or not.

We can ignore it and probably be happier for it, but there will be no end to it.

It's easy to say that after the season. You weren't at practices or the film room nor did you have any contact with JJ to know how far he was along with his offense.

there is no way that they should have "surprise" seasons with their talent level

that "surprise" season would be based on coaching, not talent (we have more), and that would be a black mark on miles

this is the only excuse worth anything

i don't think anybody thought of miles as "half-crazed"

miles = conservative

Coker was hired from within. Miles wasn't. Miles was hired to take the program to a new level and keep the success going and that's what he's done for the most part.

Starting a true freshman at quarterback in the most competitive, defense-inspired league in the country....

You're right. I don't see why he didn't start from Day One.

1 championship season (SEC and National), and we went to the national title game with 2 losses

we could win the SEC this year. that would help (but it's very unlikely)

also our teams have gotten weaker the past 2 years (yes i know we won the title in 07, but that was with 2 losses. 2006 > 2007 and we only had 1 regular season loss in 2005). THAT is why this is a big year for miles. if we trend down again or even just maintain our 2008 levels, that's a worry (remember in 2010 we have to go to AU and UF)
