Were you people asleep during the whole "Michigan courtship" last January? That was a ploy from the start by Les Miles to gain one thing and one thing only... JOB SECURITY. He told LSU, "I'm not about to pass on my alma mater, only to have you fire me next year. If you don't want me to leave, then you have to give me this ridiculous buyout."
LSU gave him the buyout basically ensuring that Miles is here for another 4-5 years at least. This is not new news, in fact, it's Germ...

The buyout does not make anything certain at all. Like I said they had the buyout money ready prior to beating 'Bama last year. If he had lost that game he may have been gone. I actually like the guy and support him. However, if they want him gone TAF will pay the money. It's 4-5 million more than last year. There are never any absolutes on anything.

the buyout also drops every year

NCAA sanctions under major rules violations is a game changer and his buyout is essentially null and void.

If he reinstates Jefferson I am through with him. He should never ever do that. J.Lee has always stayed, even though he did not play. He has worked is butt off since this happened.
I wouldn't be that hard. I mean, I'm really hoping he would be found not guilty with substantial evidence. But redshirts bc of the scandal taking up about 6 games. Let him be LEE's backup. Lee earned his spot.
* this is not the world we live in: he's on film.

It's amazing how much people's opinion changes in the offseason. Maybe the death of his sister or the bowl win or the recruiting class changed the opinions of some. Sure I like the guy and he isn't a bad coach but year after year it's the same BS. The Arkansas debacle and the Tennessee mishap are still fresh to me. He hasn't proven he can correct mistakes from one game to the next. I hope he gets better and stays a long time. It'll be easier than transitioning to a new coach. But I don't see him being any different this year.
So all those people wondering who can pay his buyout will probably be back soon. And now they have an even bigger figure to discuss.

I like Les Miles very much. That being said, he is being paid very handsomely to win. If he does not do that, he will be fired. That buyout is for a no cause firing. Losing is a cause.

You may as well put a sign on you that says "I am young, and think I know it all". You kids that have never been through the ups and down of major programs, just don't understand. LSU will sink into mediocrity again, and let's hope not worse than that. You don't think so? Check out Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Miami, Florida State, Michigan, etc., etc., etc.,. For whatever reason, you kids just don't get it. LSU is on a GREAT ride right now. Enjoy it. You have one hell of a coach..let's just hope you don't realize that too late.

I haven't seen the contract, but I am pretty certain that "cause" is defined and I am also pretty certain that "losing" is not listed as "cause". However, it is my understanding that major NCAA violations is a "cause".

Losing is not cause to terminate the contract without paying the buyout.
The ncaa sanctions are though

This. I'm no longer concerned about whether or not Miles is the coach and have grown to like him.
Me too to some extent, but then again we haven't played a game in 9 months and the last one was a good one.
Les has a way of building good feelings in the off-season and then losing support when we actually play games.
Either way, $19M buyout is absurd. Give me one good reason any coach should have that kind of guarantee, much less one that has 1 conference championship in 6 years.

Don't you just hate getting stuck with someone that has averaged 10 wins a year for six years while everybody around here knows that any other coach in America would have won 6 MNC's during that time?
