He thought it was the 4th and 1 decision punt. Through the lens of winning the game, he thought it was the wrong move. Win it on offense with one play for 1 yard. But through the bigger picture lens, he thought it showed a lack of trust by Lane in the players.

My thought later after the game is do we not have our own tush push play for a Duece Geralds or somebody? i cant believe they could stop that with Duece running and Harper/Bordelon pushing.

You JUST got one first down. 1 yard to end the game and while up by 3, you take that 1000 times out of 1000.

up 7 yes...up 3 you are crazy (and i wanted to go for it in that situation). they would already be in FG range.

I was OK with punting as the defense had been playing well most of the 2nd half and if you don't get it they are already in FG range. But I didn't agree with the soft coverage. Had I known he was going to do that I would have been all for going for it.

LSU's two losses this season have followed a somewhat similar script. The defense struggles in the first half (though to a lesser degree vs. UK). Apparent adjustments are made at HT and the defense has a dominant 3Q. In both games the defense did not allow a 3Q point.

Then, LSU gets into a spot in the 4Q where the defense needs a huge stop. The defense that was good in the 3Q suddenly gets more passive and can't get the stop.

Vs. Ole Miss LSU's offense was rolling, going TD, TD, (settle) FG at Ole Miss 5 to make it 24-24. It felt like if LSU could get one more stop after tying the game with the way the offense was playing LSU was going to score on the next possession to take the lead and potentially win the game. Instead, Baker's defense goes soft and allows OM to go 75 yards for what would be the game tying TD.

We know what happened on the final drive and OT vs. Kentucky.

Lane may not say it explicitly, but I think he now knows he can't trust Baker to get the big stop when LSU has to have it. As a result, the decision to kick the FG (from the 5) and punt on 4th down will be different going forward. Some can throw a parade all they want, but over the course of 3 years the data says LSU just can't rely on a Baker defense to close out a game.
