Has happened with both positions

None of the guys you named consistently throw a quality 3rd pitch. Do they have a 3rd pitch? Yes. But, they're only throwing 2 pitches on 90% of their deliveries. Most major leaguers don't even have 3 quality pitches. Fontenot rarely has an issue with getting hit around - it's the walks that hurt him.

Ok I’ll bite. Question - what makes an effective starter in College Baseball, or at any level for that matter?
Placement (control), movement (spin rate), speed variation, and power.
Fontenot overpowers batters. His best pitch is a tailing FB that ‘rises’ to the top of the zone. That’s the kill shot. Once they time up the fastball, the gig is up. This year was worse because his control was down, along w/ the pitch location. SEC hitters were waiting for a mistake down Main Street. In the 2nd outing of the weekend, he was prone to oblige.
If we’re gonna rely on Fontenot for 3-4 innings over a 3 pitch Coleman, Edwards, or Hellmers - we got bigger problems.

bullshite - Leiter didn’t have 2 different breaking pitches at varying speeds? You know the difference btw a 2 seam and 4 seam FB and how it moves? They call a change up a change up for s reason.
Sims had a killer Change.
Remember the rag arm that stifled LSU for Gonzaga? 3 pitches.

Kevin Gausman would disagree.

Jacob threw 3 pitches for strikes.
Leiter rarely throws the 2nd breaking ball and change.
Sims - 2 pitch guy. Will show a 3rd.
What is the point that you're trying to make? You have to know how to throw more than 2 pitches? Do you not think Fontenot knows how to throw more than 2 pitches?

Ok. What's your point? He's an all star. Most major leaguers aren't all stars.

Successful SEC Weekend starters have an arsenal in their bag. Fontenot needs to perfect the slider before attempting to develop a 3rd pitch like some posting are attempting to rationalize.

He credits this yrs success to the ability to perfect MULTIPLE pitches during COVID to complement his increased movement on his FB.

Alright, I'm totally confused.

Sounds like he expects LSU to have MLB All Star level pitchers.

Not sure what to think about the Kelly hire. I’m willing to give anyone the benefit of doubt. We will see what results we get. One huge concern I have is why are coaches turning down chances to be on staff. Needs to knock it out the park with the next hire.
Welp, looks like it's over folks. Shoulda just retained Paul and Dunn.

Keep hitters off balance without BB/HBP.

If so, wonder if it was due to his a&m contract / buyout payments

That or if he wants a year off or thinks he will get a head coach position

How many pitchers on LSU’s staff could supplant arms on Miss St, Vandy, NC State, and the like?
Maybe 1-2. That’s it. Where’s the biggest concern for 2022? Pitching.
