So how do you explain Frank Martin to South Carolina?

Wasnt he wanting to GTFO of Kansas State for some reason? Like a beef with the AD or something?

I could be completely wrong on that.

Expecting to get someone from Pitt or Baylor is pretty much a pipe dream from where I'm standing.

I don't understand where people are coming from when they say things like this...you don't think LSU could put together a contract that could blow away either one of those schools?

...still, he could have taken a different job. Too bad we couldn't have nudged Trent out sooner.

Well if a program in a major conference is winning a lot then they probably dont have a vacancy at the Head coaching position. South Carolina lucked out on Martin. Yes I agree that Alleva needs to try to sell LSU to some of the big names but we got screwed with the timing of this hire..

I agree to an extent. But we have more money than many of these schools. And there is no reason that we shouldn't be able to do far far better than Johnny Jones. I'll support the guy, but I won't get the hire.

I agree in principle but I was shocked that a guy like Amaker wasnt even interested in coming down and seeing what we had to offer (personally I didnt like him as a fit Harvard =\= LSU we went down that road with TJ)

I like that Joe is taking his time with it and not caving to the old crew. However Jones has merits and if thats where it ends up then I think he will do fine. We may not win a championship with him but I firmly believe we will have a lot more talent on the court with him then we have had the past couple years.

I think they teach that in Recruiting 101 don't they?

I thought Amaker was a horrible fit as well.

I don't think he has merits though. But if he comes the guy better crush on the recruiting front because my level of support his at about two years.

"These fans haven't been in that locker room and they don't understand what Johnny Jones means," Ceasar said. "I could have gone to a lot of places, but I came to LSU because of Johnny Jones. When he came to recruit me, he made me feel like the prettiest girl at the prom.

"He recruited all of us. He recruited Shaq. He recruited Vernel (Singleton). He brought us all in.We came to LSU because of Johnny Jones."

It always seemed to me that the best response to this is:

and we still didn't win anything. X's and O's is one component. Recruiting is one component. Demonstrating that he had a good class or couple of classes is nice, but the fact remains they fell short. Has Johnny recruited any players near that caliber in the subsequent 20 years or so?

I don't know. Why can't Nick Saban get a better job than Toledo?

Good question. Hard to fathom how he could remain mired there for that one year he was there.

Went to the final four with him as an assistant

Also Ill take having guys like Chris Jackson and Shaq and beating Georgetown Loyola marymount and UNLV in the regular season then getting bounced early over the past 3 years....

UNT isn't a good excuse to never have a great player. Steph Curry went to a school much smaller than UNT. You got your Jimmer's and your Adam Morrison's, not all great players go to Duke, Kentucky, or UNC (though those names help). It is a cop out. He has been saddled with UNT, he still has to recruit there.

LSU is a large step down from Pitt definitely and probably a sideways move at best for Baylor. Our tradition isn't good in basketball. Unless someone sees LSU as a 'sleeping giant' like in football, I just don't see us making a hire like that.

We're in the murky bottom 1/2 of mediocrity that is the SEC in basketball. Missouri, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas A&M are all better jobs than us right now, if you ignore NCAA stuff at Tennessee. Probably Arkansas as well.

Yes. Have you? Ever been to Columbia? Lived in both town for a brief period of time. Aside from being a bit bigger and having a milder winter, Columbia isn't exactly a better town to live in.
