Has anyone here had an opportunity to watch RS in practice?

I've heard reports from practice observers that he is fairly raw in the passing game at this stage.

Is that true? Does anyone know what his mechanics are like? Is he particularly inaccurate?

I'm just curious. There are no hidden agendas in this post.

Let's whip Auburn's arse.

Do you watch him throw in warm ups before the games? It's pretty rough. But we don't need him to be passing. We just need him on the damn field, running the ball.

He hasn't thrown a pass yet. He either isn't great at it or doesn't know the plays. I think it's a combination of both.

The odd thing is that he looked like a fairly good passer in some of his high school tape. He appeared to have a strong arm and decent accuracy down the field.

When I was watching practice in August, almost every receiver that Shepard threw to would have to do push ups because they couldn't catch the ball

Meaning he throws too hard?

meaning he couldnt throw a spiral to save his life....and it seemed the wind would alter his throws even on the 10 yard out routes

Really?

Check out this video beginning at about 2:20. The kid makes a lot of nice throws. It's odd that he seems to be struggling with a simple spiral in practice.

I think what 312 was suggesting is that he CAN throw a spiral, as you can see in the HS highlights. He just struggles to throw one consistantly. A little different than "cannot throw a spiral to save his life."

I look at it like this:

Russell Shepard compared to other "QBs" in the wildcat has a much better arm

Shepard compared to Division 1 QBs has a below average arm

I know it is a highlite tape, however he seems to hit his receivers right in stride...they get yards after the catch.

his throwing ability is irrelevant at this point. LM won't let him on the field. RP had a great arm and LM would not let him thow as a redshirt sophomore (until SEC championship game).

if you look at RP in 2007, that all RS will do this year. ie. run a couple of plays off tackle.

Shep reminds me of Dennis Dixon of Oregon, not much of a passer, more of a runner and lobs the ball deep like danny weurrfel did at Fla. Both qbs sucked at throwing darts but great at deep balls. In due time, shep will know the playbook and will run 80 percent of the time like Dixon did for crowton at Oregon. I wish we could see it now, but our coaches can't prepare true freshmen to play here, have to so called develop them for even clean up roles.

Does anyone think Shepard's arm is at least equal to McFadden? If so, he could be deadly in the wildcat. It's ashame we probably won't see that this year.

You obviously did not watch much of Dixon his senior year, after Belotti told Crowton to take a hike.

It was like watching 2 different QBs.

you have to play to a quarterback's strengths not to crowton's playbook.

ie. terrell pryor was the no. 1 player in the nation and he does not look good as a pro style passer in ohio state offense.

conversely, jacory harris at miami looks real good in miami's offense.

and true freshman at michigan looks good as a spread qb at michigan.

crowton is not playing to JJ or Sheps strengths.
many QBs would not look good at LSU this year.

what do you think this staff would do if tebow was our qb? try to make him a pocket passer?

I don't think we could use him.

Exactly.

Even after RP lit up Middle Tenn. State, Miles still would not let him throw until he had to start the SECCG. WTF is that about?

I can assure you RS can throw to a wide open receiver. That's what he would be looking at throwing out of the wild cat.
