I could see him playing the field to get more money from Memphis.

We should see what he is worth to both schools.

You have to keep your current employers honest in the business world.

He might. They need it.

I just think that when compared to Johnny Jones, Pastner is a much better option. I don't even think that's up for debate. Guess it boils down to whether LSU is willing to throw a decent amount of money at a basketball coach.

Either spend some money for a high ceiling, enticing guy or go safe and cheap with a steady, but unexciting guy.

I moved from La. to Tupelo,Ms. 21 years ago and bleed P.& G.. We get all of Memphis's T.V., sports news & coverage, newspaper, several TV channels cable and network and I can tell you of the good coverage and praise Pastner gets up here. I am 85 miles south of Memphis and Pastner is beloved up here. He tried to get JOBryant 111 close to us,but ,LSU prevailed. Pastner would be a good hire.

If LSU hired the "right" coach, it would only take 2-3 seasons for LSU to overtake Memphis in basketball. Not that long.

Disagree. I think it would take Memphis at least a decade to reach our status.

I would rather a risk/reward Pastner hire than a Jones hire to placate the old guard.

So would you be for or against the hire?

I can't get a read on your stance in this thread.

I think it would be a decent hire for LSU, and better than Jones. But not a homerun. Overall i'd be for it but i'm trying to caution people who are getting real fired up over the possibility. Whenever someone leaves one program and the fanbase is apathetic to him leaving (like us with Trent) should tell you that there are at least some warning signs.

Maybe not a homerun but a guy that could turn into a grand slam. Stupid statement on my part but you know what I mean.

I do like that he's young and he's kinda learning on the job. So he probably would improve with experience.

I'm fired up over the possibility that it's not simply a search killing time before they announce Johnny Jones. I would find very little exciting about a Jones hire.

Much more intrigue and ceiling, even given the apathy towards him from the Memphis fanbase, with a Pastner hire in my opinion. Some people may disagree with that but if these two are the best we can do, it's a no brainer.

I'm with you.

He's a guy I liked a lot based on age/potential/recruiting ability. It seems like he could grow a lot. Just a couple of years ago he was kind of a coaching phenom, but good point regarding a fan base being apathetic to his departure.

And basketball is predominately recruiting. He can do that.

The way Hannagriff was talking, it almost seemed like it was coming from close to Pastner. Certainly seemed like it was coming from the Memphis/Pastner end, rather than the LSU end. Maybe there is some truth to his displeasure with Memphis' move to Big East, etc.

And, as you've suggested, Memphis could be in a position LSU was with Johnson and could be "encouraging" him to look into it. Who knows?
