Does Floyd have a second or third pitch this year. He has good fast ball but after you have seen it a couple of times, like last year, teams easily caught up with it. He could be good with at least an effective 2nd pitch he can throw for strikes. Fast balls on 0-2 pitches getting ripped is no way to pitch.

It has appeared that he has difficulties commanding his off speed stuff. He does have good stuff but the command of secondary stuff is inconsistent

Yeah his change up is solid and his breaking ball is good enough to throw but still a little wild.

He’s actually pitched very well with 3 pitches so far. His breaking ball and change up have been good secondary pitches.
I don’t hold A&M against him because the strike zone absolutely sucked all weekend

The more college baseball I’ve watched the more I think the powers that be want a more conservative strike zone (tight as a nuns arse) & have asked/instructed the umps to “tighten it up”

Actually they’re closer than you think. Poche was 89-91range and occasionally topped 92. Herring’s fastball isn’t consistently that much faster. I think what sets Herring apart is the potential of his change up. It has a great fade to it inside on right handed batters. It could be an elite plus pitch.

I'm still kind of looking forward to seeing what and how much can Helmers offer is in mid-late game situations

We definitely need someone to step up. If you can count on Skenes, Floyd, and Hurd for say 15 innings every weekend, that means we need 12 from the bullpen. Little, Ack, Edwards, and Shores are probably good for 9 of those, leaving 3 innings remaining. Then you have Herring, Cooper, Dutton, Money, Collins, Guidry, Bucknam, and Hellmers.

Or we could just 10 run rule someone and not worry about those other 3 innings

He has 3 different pitches. All of which he’s thrown for strikes at times and at times he’s thrown none of them for strikes.

Watch the games.

The fastball will always be Floyd’s best pitch. It’s that good. It’s a 96 mph that plays like a 100 mph fastball. I don’t think he’s an ace but he’ll be fine.

Unnecessary jab at Poche. He had the strongest demeanor on the mound of any of our pitchers that I can remember in the last 15 years. I would take him over all but a handful of pitchers we have had in that timespan. The ones I would take over him are current MLB pitchers and Skenes.

Hanny mentioned earlier this week that this is a season that the umps will be judged against the machine. Does Tracman do balls and strikes, too? Anyway, apparently this happens every few years, and umps’ zones shrink to line up with how they’re written in the rule book. May not be a spoken directive, but will be a consequence of them wanting to be graded higher.

Probably tough for guys who love to give a ball or so off the black with 2 strikes so they can show boat while ringin’ ‘em up.

Speaking of, my daughter played in a coaches pitch league this year. 1 umpire in the field, no calling balls and strikes. No walks. They have to swing and miss on strike 3 to K. Played in the season ending tournament last weekend, and I guess the tourney directors spring for an extra ump behind the plate. We had one guy—in his 50s, probably—who couldn’t call balls and strikes, mind you—just about crow hop and throw his entire right arm towards the heavens every time a little 8 or 9 year old girl swung and missed to strike out. Alternated between a “That’s Three!!!!” and “HAAAAAAAAH” louder than any guy at any level I could remember. Was practically Leslie Neilsoning it from Naked Gun by the last inning or 2. Wild.
