I can only guess he was supposed to steal at some point. Or maybe PM wanted to call a hit and run sooner and he wasn’t paying attention.

Right. Rest/rehab then give it a good go to see if you've magically healed or just blow it all the way out.

Yep. He won’t come back again. It’s too late to try TJ and be ready for next year.

What's pretty amazing to me is it seems Paul gets blamed for injuries on here at some point every season yet we never seem to see that from the football staff.

We had a bad run there in 2019 with arm soreness. There were some questions about Dunn more than PM. I haven’t seen anything else. And that was the year State lost 7 pitchers before sec even started...

I don't blame it all on Dunn. These kids are throwing entirely too much in travel/youth ball and high school. Some kids are pitching in travel and rec and with their personal pitching coach, plus playing a position...all year round. Then, they're pitching in 2 games per week and playing a position through high school. My blood boils when I see a high school player catch a whole game, then pitch a whole game, then go back to catch a whole game, rinse repeat.

I defended him a bunch, then, too. Until we took the trip to UGA and happened to fly with a few parents. Got to talk a lot of baseball and one of the pitcher's parents opened up about Dunn's approach. It was to the point that they were considering a transfer. I advised talking with PM and Dunn with their concerns. As much as I blast PM here, you'd think I was a PM defender after that conversation. Their son is still here. Dunn made a couple changes with the midweek preps/schedule. They used to throw A LOT between starts.

ETA: I want to be clear that I'm not claiming to have made a difference here. I was only relaying how serious some people were taking Dunn's approach.

I don't doubt it at all. Most pitching coaches have likely had to adjust some things.

I know the arm soreness is the hot topic here but once it reaches the point of soreness and they get shut down, where have the mistakes been? Jake Latz was on odd saga that had a lot to do with his parents wanting to try odd remedies.

The Gilbert injury was an odd one. Not sure if it can be blamed on the doctors though

Gilbert was odd and he never really came back. Not sure you can blame a trainer on a guy coming back too soon if he never does.

Yea I missed the context of the conversation before I posted. I thought you were talking about the mishandling of injuries in general until I went back and read more.

Well wasn't that just some first class medical advice, to clear him for play.

Gilbert was a strange situation. I know an injury of some sort had alot to do with it but he just lost it. You don't see that very often.

Really the only one that comes to mind is Walker during the CWS.
Garza, Hilliard, Hill, Storz, Dugas, Labas (in 2018), CJ Willis, Hughes, Hess, Watson, Reid and Marceaux (in 2019) come immediately to my mind without doing any research.

All of those players either aggravated their injuries when they returned to play, came back for a game or two and then had to sit again or when they were cleared to play by the trainer after an injury they couldn't perform anywhere near 100%. Dugas couldn't even grip the bat with his left hand when he returned to the lineup after surgery for a torn ligament in his thumb in 2019.

I'm not one to criticize players or baseball staff. I believe my posting history has shown that. But our baseball trainer function needs improvement when it comes to managing player injuries. If Mainieri is at fault by rushing players back into the lineup against the trainer's recommendation (which I doubt) then he needs to do better. It's been a pet peeve of mine for several years but unlike other posters I don't repeatedly harp about it on the Rant.
