Dinardo was our most effective recruiter. Kevin Faulk, Rondell Mealey, Cecil Collins, Booger Mcfarland, upset win over #1 UF in 1997.....he also warrants recognition..... LSU 27 ND 9 1997 Independence Bowl: Mealey had 34 carries for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns
1997 Independence Bowl was a college football postseason bowl rematch between the LSU Tigers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

I still have no idea how he convinced Kevin Faulk to come to LSU.

Well, this would have been the year to bring back the 1997 team for the 20-year anniversary of the win over #1 Florida, but then Florida and Alleva happened.

It should be noted the first game in tiger stadium versus ND that year was the most miserable i have ever been at any sporting event

I'm a youngin but what other schools were recruiting Kevin Faulk? Was he ever close to going to other schools?

The Independence Bowl wasn't much better. Both were very cold and rainy. I remember there was sleet at the Indy Bowl before the game.

How in the WORLD did Notre Dame beat a good LSU team that year, and beat the BADLY in Tiger Stadium?
The Irish had to come from behind the very next week to beat winless Hawaii, to qualify for a bowl game!

He was a top 5 national recruit. Everybody wanted him.
Not sure how close he was to going somewhere else.

Somehow the link inspired me to wiki Bob Davie to see what that loser was doing these days. 9-4 last year at New Mexico.
Interesting coaching tree:
Steve Addazio: Temple (2011–2012), Boston College (2013–present)
Urban Meyer: Bowling Green (2001–2002), Utah (2003–2004), Florida (2005–2010), Ohio State (2012–present)
Dan Mullen: Mississippi State (2009–present)
Joker Phillips: Kentucky (2010–2012)
Mike Sanford: UNLV (2005–2009), Indiana State (2013–2016)
Charlie Strong: Louisville (2010-2013), Texas (2014–2016), South Florida (2017-present)

One of the few games I went with my dad to. It was a disaster.

He was recruited by Florida, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, LSU and possibly others, but found those in a article in the Times-Picayune

I don't think so. Barely qualifying for a bowl in SHREVEPORT doesn't make a team "great".

Yea but that restaurant was garbage.

Pretty sure that Michigan was going to be his destination until an unexpected flip to LSU.

The same Notre Dame squad (Jarious Jackson QB) opened the 1998 season crushing the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines.
quote:
With wins in their final five regular season games of 1997, the Irish started Davie's second season with confidence. Despite losing record-setting quarterback Ron Powlus, the Irish returned 14 starters, including tailback Autry Denson and three senior linebackers that were placed on the preliminary list for the Dick Butkus Award. Powlus was replaced by Jarious Jackson who had played sparingly in 1997 but had amassed almost 200 passing yards in the time. In Jackson's first start, against Michigan, he threw two touchdowns to lead the Irish, ranked 22nd, over the 5th ranked Wolverines. Denson added 162 yards and two touchdowns to give the Irish a 36–20 win

I remember that 97 ND OLine towering over our DLine. they had some big ol' boys. we also effectively played a 4-2-5 that year, with the 5th DB being a safety. I seem to remember them pushing us around a good bit.
a lotta ppl don't remember this, but the Indy Bowl that year was actually Tepper's first game. he implemented some of his 3-4 stuff, it looked good, and that was part of the reason for the excitement for 98.

GD: Kevin? You know you can play football anywhere, right? You're probably the best skill position football player in America - and if not, you're top 5. I know you're leaning really hard to Florida State. I understand that - they've got a great program over there. But, I'm building a great program at LSU - around you. We're going to hand it to you, throw it to you and let you make plays in the return game. Over the next 3 or 4 years, your name is going to be synonymous with LSU winning football games. Plus, if you go to Florida State, your folks back in Carencro and Lafayette are going to see, what, 2 games per season? They'll have some of the best seats in the house for 6 home games at LSU.
What do you say?
