To be fair, he had Underwood till people decided to pay him NFL money.
an unsigned high school senior shouldn't be your backup plan for the following season if your 5th year senior QB gets hurt. Kiffin just signed 3 QBs out of the portal in one offseason. Kelly signed a backup QB from MS State, which is even more baffling after Collin Hurley got in a car accident in January of 2025. He had every opportunity to make sure he signed some depth in the portal at the QB position but didn't. He also didn't sign a single high school QB in the 2025 cycle. His only QB signee in 2024 was a 16 year old Colin Hurley who re-classified AND early enrolled. And he didn't sign any QBs in 2023.
Kelly effectively relied on Nuss staying for 5 years and being able to get Underwood to campus. He never had any contingency for if anything went wrong over the course of the following 3 seasons.

BK lying all season saying he wasn't hurt...............
we all knew
Once they all departed and the new "Mostly Non-SEC Caliber Personnel" were still being coached by the incompetent Brad Davis, it was just a matter of time before Nussmeier got injured. (And that happened early in Spring practice and was reinforced because they couldn't block anybody)

BK refusing to sit him and rest him vs tech and SELU was peak BK clown shite
There is a plethora of Kelly clown shite surrounding his tenure, but this one is at least plausible.
I mean, he did see Van Buren at practice every day (when he wasn't working on his golf game) and likely thought an injured Nuss is the lesser evil. In hindsight, I am so glad he went the route he did. It is now painfully obvious a checked out Kelly was going to be an 8-4 coach at best, and no better leader than a mid-season interim Frank Wilson.

Garrett Nussmeier is an overpaid bum and will go down in history as one of the worst LSU QB's to do it.

BK didn't bother recruiting a back up...
We had the #1 QB in high school locked up for the entire recruiting cycle, until Michigan's boosters decided to outbid everyone in the last minute.
And we had a young transfer who started over half the season at Miss State, slotted as insurance.
If things played out as we intended (Nuss stays healthy, Underwood comes, Van Buren is 3rd string), we had the best qb room in the country

That's just not true.
If a first-year starter in the SEC next season passes for over 4000 yards, over 64% completion rate, and 29-12, would people say that's a good season? Yes, they would.
That was Nussmeier in 2024.
Now, the NFL is a different discussion. I have not seen enough in handling pressure well in my opinion. He did it at times. In the comeback vs. Ole Miss in 24.
He got knocked out of the game vs. Oklahoma in 24 because Campbell got beat by R Mason Thomas for a sack, then he came back and played well.
He had good games, but he also got affected by pressure at times. That's what he really needed to improve going into 25 in my opinion. And we didn't really get to see that.
