I think it's more that Jones just doesn't use his bench. He almost never uses a player for a few minutes at a time unless his hand is forced. So you are either a major player on the team or you don't play at all, which is frustrating to watch.
Too bad because this team has a lot of different pieces that could cause matchup problems for certain teams. But that seems to be his philosophy.
There are plenty of good teams across the country every year that only go with a 7-8 man rotation. Robinson started the first 4-5 games this year and has scored a grand total of 4 points. Quarterman has simply been too good and too important to this team to not play extended minutes. I'm sure Robinson is frustrated, but Odo earned more minutes with his performance against Clemson, and with McNesse and UMass being teams that like to play at a faster pace those games probably weren't a good matchup for him.
As far as the bench is concerned TQ is really the only guy that gives you anything right now. I don't know what pieces really give you favorable matchups. Bridgewater is generally going to be a mismatch inside for LSU. Patterson can give you some minutes at the point, but he's not scoring a lot. Plus moving Gray to the "2" when he is in there doesn't really do a lot of good because Gray isn't an off-guard. He's not a great shooter and needs the ball in his hands to be effective. Epps has athleticism, but right now seems to be happy just being a jump-shooter that shoots a low %.
The make up of a team is different each year. This season LSU has 5 guys that will make up the bulk of the scoring. They're just not a deep team.

Patterson should get more minutes in spot situations like the second half last night. The same with Malone, Robinson, and Eddlestone (who looked pretty decent when he was in earlier in the season). While Bridgewater has already gotten some good playing time and is more of a "next year" player at this point I would hate to see him not get in at all for the rest of the season.

The main issue is that if a coach only plays 6-7 guys regularly then LSU will never have a deep team. Disgruntled players will transfer early, the starters will declare early, and you will have the same thing every year regardless of the recruiting.

Not bashing, but are you serious? So you'd rather have Jordan Mickey and Martin play 28 minutes so Malone and Eddlestone can each get like 4? That in no way will ever...ever make our team better.
We don't have the talent to play 10 people. It's that easy. Patterson should get 8-10 minutes per game, I wish he would get about 5-6 per half, I don't like how he is not used in the 2nd half. Bridgewater should maybe play about 6 minutes per game. Everyone else through 7 games haven't proven dick. Robinson has more turnovers than points, same amount of fouls as rebounds. Malone...I really don't think I even need to say anything about him. He's a character and glue guy that will help build chemistry. Eddlestone is a fricken 6'7 walk on. Who, in his only game of real action, played 4 minutes and did not accumulate a single stat.
We have 7 players who are quality players. Then Bridgewater can be successful in certain matchups. 7-8 man rotation is really all you need.

I'd love to be able to go 10 guys deep but the truth is we sacrifice too much right now after the 7th guy on the bench. When you think about, none of LSU's Final 4 teams went more than about 7 or 8 deep but had guys up to about 9 or 10 that played admirably when forced into spot duty. The 1986 team started the year pretty deep but lost 3 post players by the halfway point and only played about 8 guys in the tourney. At the end of the year, I remember only Oliver Brown, Bernard Woodside and Jose Vargas off the bench (and one game with Nebosha Bukumirovich seeing time at point). The same is true with the 1981 and 2006 teams. In '81, it was the starting 5 with Sims and Jones off the bench. Everyone else was spot duty. Tyrone Black was a decent 6'8" guy who could shoot but almost never played. It can be done as long as we don't lose any of the top 6 guys we have right now.

Last year we had a 10 man rotation.
Considering that Hammink and Odo would go several games without playing, I wouldn't call it a 10 man rotation.
Those subs were largely done because of foul trouble. This team has done a much better job not fouling as often, so we haven't had to play the subs as much.
I originally thought we'd play 8 (Epps, Patterson, and TQ, but with Robinson in place of Odo). If Robinson shapes up, we'd have a 9 player rotation.

I would rather have Quarterman replace a guard than a big
I think it hurts rebounding and places unnecessary pressure on Mickey and Martin, I like having other space eaters in the game
certainly there are times for a 3 guard lineup, but not simply either the starting lineup, or a lineup with 3 guards imo is shortsighted

TQ and Hornsby are both elite rebounders for guards. They grab 5 boards a game. We have one of the best rebounding teams in the country, I don't think Odo for TQ is a drop off in rebounding.
Also as mentioned above, when epps is healthy, he will play minutes. So essentially we have an 8-9 man rotation based on Bridge playing matchups

Reminds me of when Shaq's dad was saying that Shaq was going to go pro because he was getting fouled so much in the SEC. Hey folks, the NBA is harder, faster, meaner, just about anything you want to name. If you can't cut it in the SEC, you sure ain't going to last long in the NBA.

most conventional basketball teams (like the NBA since that was referenced) have 2 forwards and a center, not a guard playing forward
and I do concede Quarterman and Hornsby are very good rebounding guards
and I like seeing Quarterman in the game...replacing another guard, not a center
I also concede that there are times a three guard lineup is optimal
but still say I would like to see 3 bigs in the game more, not just with the starting 5; keeping 2 7 footers on the bench doesn't make sense to me, plus need to build the depth
and did not mean pressure like they could not handle it personally, I mean that it puts unnecessary pressure on the frontcourt
just my opinion
