If this "arm around his shoulder" approach doesn't start working, then it may be time for Mainieri to start challenging Bregman. Bat him lower in the lineup and see if how he responds, if he keeps slumping, bench for a game or two.

and move up someone else who isn't hitting either? Bregman won't surprise anyone at the bottom of he lineup either. people know who he is no matter the position in the lineup.

The move is not about matchups, rather to see if Bregman wears it as a chip on his shoulder and responds.
