Considering he just hit the first of his career I know it’s asking a lot but we really could use him being a 15-20 HR guy to hit behind Jones. I think I heard that Jones has seen 80% breaking balls so far this season.
Obviously that creates another problem bc then you have to start talking about how to get Larson in the lineup but it would be a good problem to have.
I hear people on TV and the radio keep talking about needing a home run hitter to protect Jones, but I'm not sure why people think that is necessary. If you have a guy who hits for a high average, and can drive the ball in the gaps, that's not going to be someone you want to walk Jones to get to. And we have plenty of guys who can do that. But we also do have guys who can go deep. Dickinson and Hernandez have plenty of power. Hernandez hasn't had a lot of great swings yet, but he should settle in and be a legitimate threat, even if his numbers aren't as gaudy as last year, now that he's in the SEC. Dickinson strikes me as someone who will transition smoothly to this league.
Like I said, though, it doesn't have to be power guys, imo. We all saw how dangerous Milam was down the stretch last year, and if he gets back to that, he could hit behind Jones if needed. Curiel, though it's obviously very early in his career, based on how he handled our pitchers in the scrimmages, more than how he's tearing it up right now, looks like a superstar in the making. Jay (and myself) would prefer to keep him in that 2 spot, I'm sure, but if it becomes absolutely necessary to move him behind Jones to protect him, that's another possibility, and then Milam could move up to the 2-hole.
That's my long way of saying, I think it will work itself out. Someone will establish themselves behind Jones, and pitchers will think twice about pitching around him. Of course, Jones has to be patient and take his walks when they do throw him junk, otherwise they'll have no incentive to change the game plan.

Love how excited his teammates were for him.

Yeah there was nothing cheap about that HR, 382 feet and 106mph exit velocity

This kid has the talent, and he has a great swing. He's just gotten caught up in the log jam of talent LSU has.
There's a reason why Jay Johnson refers to Frey as a "starter," even though he hasn't started that often. Johnson is saying that Frey possesses that level of talent.
We'll see what happens with him this season, but with enough PT I wouldn't be surprised to see the kid really start to bash.

He's been saying since Frey's freshman year that he "could win the Golden Spikes some day". Those are just words, obviously, and doesn't prove anything, but Jay is clearly an excellent evaluator of talent, and so if he says that about you, that's not nothing.

Dude was an animal in H.S. Played with and against my grandson. They both were on the same travel ball team for a few years, and he played for Rosepine in H.S. against Leesville. The last game he and my grandson played against each other, my grandson didn't pitch, but the pitcher that did sent him a meat pitch that is still orbiting the earth.
