Former LSU Gymnastics Coach Aramando Vega passed

If you took gymnastics lessons in the 70's and 80's as a kid, you probably knew him. Great guy. Had a great family.

LSU Hall of Fame gymnastics coach Armando Vega died at the age of 90 on Monday at his home in Dallas.

Vega served as the Tigers' men's gymnastics coach from 1972 to 1984, securing the NCAA Gymnastics Coach of the Year award in both 1977 and 1978. He developed 58 All-American athletes during his tenure with the school.

Vega was inducted into the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021 and produced nine teams that finished in the NCAA Top 10. He also led the Tigers to 12 straight Southern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League championships and was named SIGL Coach of the Year in 1973 and 1976, with him being inducted into the United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1977.

As a gymnast, Vega won 11 titles in the AAU Championships, earning seven silver and seven bronze medals as well as earning six NCAA titles.

He participated as a member of the 1956 and 1964 U.S. Olympic gymnastics teams and served as head coach for Mexico's 1968 Olympic squad.
