Locking in a $140m floor vs. making less than $1m each of the next 3 years with a possibility he never pans out or injuries derail his career before that post-arb contract...that would be pretty hard to pass on And it doesn't really kill his upside. If he becomes an All-Star talent and they want to keep him happy, they'll give him a new contract closer to market value. And if they can't, they'll trade him to some place that will
Just seems equally risky locking in 6 more years at 22 million a year

It’s a lot of money but the list of players in #1 overall prospect territory who don’t even make it as at least average starters (i.e., what this contract is paying for) is very, very short. Delmon Young and Brandon Wood are arguably the entire list
$140m is a heck of an investment but at this stage in his career (call up time) it’s been way more de-risked than just being hopeful
Plus MLB players are just paid a frickton

I don’t understand the point of this post. Yeah he was committed to LSU. He never came to campus and never played an inning for LSU.

Because it plays a role in Skenes' future. With Pittsburgh committing $140 Million to Griffin, they almost certainly will trade Skenes sooner rather than later. Especially with a salary cap more than likely coming to MLB.

This deal doesn’t create mutually exclusive outcomes. They could pay Griffin minimum wage, it doesn’t really impact their (in)ability to afford Skenes. That’s never happening to begin with
