Couldn’t he have just stepped on home for the challenge on the first runner?

He certainly didn’t need to go tag him. Idiot move.

What happens if he goes sit in dugout? Automatically out?

This will never happen again, but in hind sight, Just hold the ball and stand on home. Runner doesn't score and guy would be out in the dugout.

He was going to be out regardless

yes.

You stay at home if you're the pitcher. Step on the plate for good measure, but that guy is out. No reason to chase him to the dugout.

Should be considered out of the baseline.

Assuming we appeal it. Which we obviously would have. There were so many mistakes in that segment by us it's ridiculous.

The coach running out yelling to tag him out didn't help matters.

A player has been considered to give himself once once one foot hits the dugout. Mostly see on a dropped strike 3, atleast on high school level anyways.

After he missed the plate in most levels you don’t have to run to the dugout to challenge the play - just step on the plate.

Not sure about college though.

All they had to do was appeal and he would be out

Correct. In this instance the runner did not abandon his base running, he thought he was safe. A dead ball appeal would be proper.

One foot in the dugout rule is on a dropped strike 3.

Rule 8-4-1 section 9

Runner is out:
“on a dropped third strike, he gives up by entering the bench or dugout area”

Not the same as a missed base.
