Parrain's is my go-to suggestion for out of towners. Good seafood and atmosphere

Parrains not what it used to be a few years ago, Honestly Baton Rouge is not a good restaurant town. There have been flashes of good as a places pop up for a few years and then fall apart for various reasons. Lately places that succeed in real restaurant cities like N.O. and Lafayette have opened spinoffs in BR and then fall apart in a chain mentality. Don't expect edible Cajun in BR. If you want food Fri. Go to Bucktown in NO
or Lafayette, but get back on the road to BR early Saturday.

Ignore the redneck downvotes.

Thanks! I have no doubt we can get great food in NOLA, but the reason for these yearly trips is to experience a college football town, tailgate and stadium, and a big part of that is the excitement in the town the night before!

Is the Parade Ground the primary place we should be walking around?

There are plenty of really good restaurants in BR. You'll have a great time Friday and Sat. there.

We were in sub zero WV last year. So heat won’t be great, but it is an upgrade

we fully intend to stay in BR the entire time, (we have an AirBnB) part of this visit is to see the college town as we have all been to NOLA before.
You absolutely DO NOT want to see or venture into any part of Baton Rouge except for the area immediately off the LSU campus.

If you wind up at the Chimes, don't go any further north on Highland Road than what's on that block. Stick to the Chimes and Walk On's south of Tiger Stadium.

If you try heading over to the Perkins Road Overpass area, please follow some people that you've meet on campus. You don't not want to make a wrong turn or two and wind up lost in "No Man's Land" in BR. (And there are many)

Just stay close to the LSU campus home base and you'll be OK...….

The main tailgating areas are: Dalrymple Drive, Parade Grounds, near Indian Mounds, near Parker Ag Center, Nicholson Drive. Etc.
Don't forget to check out the Union, Quad, TAF pregame in the Maravich Assembly Center, Greek Amphitheater, Memorial Tower, a d of course, Mike VIs habitat.

I agree with all of this Alt 26, but would also add in the Chimes new Rooftop bar will be open, for that Friday night slot, follow that up with a stop at the Varsity. Robert Earl Keen will be there, so the crowd might be a little older than other Fridays.

Next, if the group is from "all over" then they are not adequately prepared for the sauna that is Louisiana heat. So I would say don't over consume on Friday night, because you will dehydrate prior to kickoff.

Next, if the want the full experience, start Saturday at 10am with a 6:30 kick off. Be prepared to pay for parking ($40 per car) or to walk a mile or two to the stadium and maybe still pay. Be prepared to spend big money on concessions (you will be thirsty because of all the heat.) A coke is going to run you 8 buck. I would be the beers will be in the range of 10 to 12$ each (TBD).

Don't even think about the putting on a red hat, red shirt or anything with an Alabama, Florida Gators or Texas A&M logo. If you want to have "good time" come in purple, come in gold, hell come in a white T-shirt and a pair of shorts.

Finally, understand, kick off is at 6:30. Odds are the game will end at 9:30-10:00PM. Expect traffic- 2 to 2.5 hours to get off campus post game. No one likes it, but its life. The campus is built on the Mississippi river, you can't exit campus in all 4 directions like most other places in this world, and it takes a long time to move 102,000 or even 60,000 people out of a small area. So, save a cold drink or two to sip on while you are waiting for traffic to clear up. Flip on FM98.1 in the car, and listen to the post game wrap up. Either you will hear us celebrating a new offense or the slimy underbelly will call in and complain about the same old things we have for a decade (at this point I expect the latter, its just tradition at this point.)

Thanks!

We will be walking everywhere so traffic shouldn't be a worry. I can guarantee no bama, gators, or aggies gear will be worn! Most of us will be in LSU apparel of some sort with the lone exception being the one in the group who graduated from Georgia Southern.

My #1 tip would be to hydrate before, during, and after if you’re going to be drinking a lot.

Don’t be one of those fans that throws up and passes out in the stands in the first quarter and has to be EMS’d out on a stretcher.

Go to Bogie’s Friday and Fred’s after the game on Saturday.

Walk-On’s food is below average, so wouldn’t recommend that unless you just want to say you’ve been there.

If the dude wants the LSU/college experience, that’s where I would recommend. On game day there are plenty of older people at fred’s.

If he wants a vanilla local bar scene, he can go to the bulldog, uncle earl’s, or third street, though there’s nothing memorable or unique about any of those.
