This is the way college football has been for all of its existence except for a few BCS years.

But consider these sources:

- 62 sportswriters who cover the sport
- 65 coaches who coach the sport
- 13 random AD’s, former coaches, government officials, etc.

Which group is in the best position to decide who should play for the championship and seed the teams?

The CFP was intended to make strength of schedule/record of paramount importance, but it’s clearly been supplanted by the “eye test” to impress those 13.

It just amazes me that these people can't defend their decisions

That's the beauty of it from their perspective. They don't have to defend it. It just is.

As we have no choice but to accept it.

College football is sadly following in the footsteps of the NFL: turning into an entertainment enterprise rather than a competitive sport. Where things like TV ratings, ad sales, and net profit matter more than actually deciding on the field which team is the best.

Highschool and Div II (FCS) football is still based on competition.

I stopped watching the NFL long ago when it became obvious that things are fixed.

The CFP committee is taking its queues from the NFL IMO.

Good post.

I always thought the #1 team was the best team not the complete team.

In Alabama's defense Western Carolina was a much better team when they scheduled them

oh yes, absolutely.
W.Carolina was/is a good matchup for Al early in the season. considered one of the toughest games on their schedule. one of the reasons Al polled so high in the rankings and kept the #5 spot after losing to the Fighting Tigers of LSU. Saban made it clear that W.Carolina would "Probably Be The Best Team They Play This Year..." "We are entitled to a playoff game."

Right on, man. The complete team isn't decided by ruminating; it's decided on the field in the most desperate of games. This committee is in their own world. "It's beautiful, man," they cry. Then reality comes out the tunnel and into the stadium.

I cannot wait to play OSU. Burrow has a score to settle and it will get uglier than 2007. The real test will be getting past Clemson.

It would be hilarious if OSU lost in the semis to Bama’s backup QB. It could easily happen.

Exactly...it's either a boldfaced lie, or it's a biased assessment. Either way Hancock and the committee deserve to have their asses handed to them.

But but Texas isn’t as good as people thought they were. I love how LSU scheduling a game AT freaking Texas is actually hurting them in the eyes of the committee. That’s one of the ballsiest non-conference games you can schedule.

OSU is about to get a taste of this. Cincinnati will lose to Memphis 2 weeks in a row and drop out of the playoff poll. What will the committee have to say when that happens? Probably nothing.
