Field Turf vs. Natural Grass Sporting Fields - Warm Weather Playability
Artificial turf fields reach high temperatures on a sunny day. A Brigham Young University study by Williams and Pulley measured synthetic turf temperatures exceeding 120 F; by comparison, asphalt was 94 F. These high temperatures put players at risk for heat-related injuries and necessitate frequent wetting of turf surfaces on hot days. Natural grass remains cooler than surrounding air temperatures during warm weather play, but watering schedules may reduce field availability if poorly timed.

[quote]Does it have to do with the upper decks taking away sunlight? How can a program with so much money have such a shitty field?[quote]
[quote]I think that the upper decks have alot to do with it from what i've heard and read on this site. I think the school has obviously spent alot of money getting the drainage right, and want the best possible field, but it's obvious that the natural grass field isn't working.

The upper decks at Neyland appear to be just as high or higher than those in Tiger Stadium. Ever seen the turf at Tennessee? It's one of the best in the conference.
The "Upper decks/lack of sunlight" excuse is BS. It's ALL about the LSUAD groundskeepers lack of knowledge. They can make all the excuses they want. Bertman didn't want to spend the money and hire a professional and experienced turf manager. You get what you pay for. If there is a turf problem again this season, Alleva will HAVE to bite the bullet and do just that. If I were a betting man, I'd wager they'll probably try to use all the turf problems excuses as a justification for putting in Field Turf. Can you imagine the temperature of Field Turf in Tiger Stadium in September?...........
Groundskeeper Incompetence/Negligence. That's it a nutshell. NOBODY else in the S.E.C. seems to have a problem with football turf. LSU doesn't need to be sinking to the the level of our friends up in Oxford. Ole Miss had turf problems and they just gave up and put the fake stuff in. That's funny, because just up the road in Starkpatch, there is the best football field in the S.E.C.....

Are games played in the summer/hot temperatures? I'd say the hottest Arkansas game of the year will be the first or second game of the year...then it wont matter at all.

I wouldn't mind seeing field turf with the new Mike logo at midfield in place of the tiger eye. I would also put the new Mike logo on the helmet to standardize the brand a little better.
i hate that goddamn tiger eye more than words could ever express. and yes, field turf would be awesome. its better and faster than grass. just because grass is natural doesn't make it better. rattlesnakes are natural too, how bout we put those all over the field while were at it.

A four page argument about grass. Yep, it's July.

granted it's a pedantic topic but there have been times over the past few years when I've watched LSU on TV and been struck by how our field look like 100 yards of stir fried shite

LSU A&M, what does the A stand for? Why can't they grow grass? Its not that hard.

Field turf would be a huge upgrade and it'd be a smart move by LSU w/ the speed LSU recruits
I never understood this whole "it would help LSU's speed" argument. Don't both teams play on the same surface during the course of a game? If grass slows LSU, won't it slow the opponent equally? If turf showcases LSU's speed, doesn't it also showcase the other team's speed?
I'd frankly rather have Florida play LSU on "slow" turf than "fast" turf!

The fact that this thread is four pages long is so damn hilarious. Drunk people at 2:30 in the morning don't go on this long about this shite.
Didn't Larry Miller make fun of this in his 5 Levels of Drinking?

It's not the upper decks; as people have pointed out there are other stadiums that have decks as high as ours and don't have nearly the shitty field we do

No. It hurts the team the most that has the natural relative advantage. Like bad weather. If you are playing against an awesome passing team and you suck at defending it and passing yourself, then you like a muddy field and poor conditions because it neutralizes their advantage.

Doesn't LSU have a very well rated landscape architecture program???
Posted on 7/28/09 at 2:44 am to RogerTheShrubber
Wouldn't the fact that we had "that ol' hot, nasty field turf" give us leverage in demanding night games?

Still doesn't solve the problem of an incompetent groundscrew.
Maybe you should send Alleva a resume, and pitch him your services. A guy named "RogerTheShrubber" should be able to get it straightened out.

Anyone here realize that Arkansas ripped out the grass at RRS and installed turf just recently?
