To hire the best coaches, schools spend huge amounts of money. But when has that really paid off for any university? I get it if a coach has been there for around ten years and consistently wins, but what’s the motivation to perform well if you know you’ll still get paid even after being fired?

No they don't. It depends on who you hire. If you want to hire a big name and lure him awya from another school and outbid others interested you more than likely do but look at A&M's contract for Elko. Very much incentive laden

Six years, $42 million total value (runs through Jan. 31, 2030)
A flat-rate buyout of 75% of the contract's remaining value in Years 1-3
A flat-rate buyout of 80% of the contract's remaining value in Years 4-6

$50,000 if named SEC Coach of the Year and $100,000 should he win a national coach of the year award. A $100,000 paycheck also comes his way for each SEC Championship Game appearance.

Should Elko achieve any of the postseason incentives, he will automatically receive a one-year contract extension.

$1 million for a CFP appearance
$1.5 million for a CFP Quarterfinals appearance and/or SEC championship
$2 million for a CFP Semifinals appearance
$2.5 million for a CFP National Championship Game appearance
$3.5 million for a CFP National Championship

That's why you have to find the right person who has high character, personal drive, ambition, and competitive fire beyond just getting paid.

You are not wrong, but look at it another way. What does it cost you if you don't get the big name coach? You could lose fan interest, revenue, prestige. It won't happen fast, but over time you could fall behind in revenue as other schools spend to increase it. It only takes one coach to ruin a program sometimes. ADs are terrified of this risk and being remembered for that.

quote:

To hire the best coaches

You have to in order to hire the most "in demand" coaches. "Best" is relative. The in demand coaches hold all of the negotiating leverage. BK didn't NEED to leave ND. He was winning and ND wasn't looking to get rid of him. LSU NEEDED a HC, and the fans/donors demanded "only the best".

4 years ago LSU fans would have been furious if LSU hired Georgia's DC who had never been a HC. Now, because of the BK failure, LSU fans will be more open to other options. That opens up the market to where there is less need to give a big money guaranteed contract because the supply of potential coaches is much greater.
