I realize that there was another thread just about Raph Rhymes's average w/ RISP. But it's not just him. Lately, this entire team just hasn't been able to hit with RISP! Esp last Sat and Sun against SC and tonight they were 1 for 10 before Ty Ross's SAC fly. It is REALLY frustrating to watch. Hopefully, we can improve in this area over the next few weeks before the postseason.

As a fan for many years, it hurts me internally when we constantly have a leadoff single or double and then do not bunt them over. I get allowing the team to swing away early in the game, but after that doesn't work a few times, why don't we change the game plan and play a little small ball. Last Saturday, we ran ourself out of an inning several times and I honestly thought Maineri was going to start sac bunting the leadoff over...did he do it...nope

Mainieri used to sac bunt way too much. It's just not necessary to sac bunt in college baseball every opportunity. I'm glad he's finally tuned it back.

I completely agree with your point about bunting man! But honestly I doubt any of our guys can bunt worth a shite! You saw what happened when Laird tried to bunt tonight! It floors me how many guys in college and professional baseball lack bunting skills!

I hope we bunt less than we do now. An hitting with RISP is based on luck

I finally agree with you hcb. I'd consider moving Jacoby up.

Last season was the same. Also hit and run fails are frustrating.

The only good reason to have Laird in the 2 hole is to bunt runners over when the chance arrises. However, he started the year as a bad bunter, got better after a few weeks, but now has gone back to being a poor bunter. Laird is not really the guy we need at the plate when a base hit is needed. It drives me crazy to see him hacking away at 2-0 and 3-1 pitches with nobody on base. He needs to work the count deep just about every single time he bats with the bases empty. It would be different he looked like he was more of a threat to get an extra base hit with his 2-0 and 3-1 cuts, but he has the same softball slap hitter look even when sitting in a hitter's count.

I don't think he needs to be benched, because his production at the plate is good enough considering the great defense that he plays, but it's definitely time to move him in the batting order.

I do not want to bench him. Hes a good outfielder and adds speed to the lineup but he needs to bat 9th.

Why does it matter if we bunt people over when we can't hit them in anyway? I think bunting people over too much is wasting outs and not having confidence in your guys to come through. What's the difference in bunting a guy over but then you have confidence in your next guy to come through but you dont with the guy at the plate whose about to bunt. Makes no sense at all. Bunting is for bitches!

Yeah, I haven't heard you say to bench him. I was just making my point clear that I didn't want him benched either.

I think Laird is your quintessential 9 hole. Good speed, can hit fastballs, decent bunter if he has to be (has been awulf lately, though). If he gets on, then you have a good "2" hole in Mcmullen and then a decent "3" hole in Ibarra (would be my move there) and so on.
