That is a pretty shitty way on judging someone before giving them a chance to even step on the practice field as a Freshman, just saying.
Do you how many great Freshman have come in unconditioned? Cody was a Juco and that fat arse could barely stay conditioned long enough to stay on the field a entire series.
Wasn't Porter here during the off season and working out?

This Porter kid endured the worst thing I can imagine, being asked to sit out SIX WHOLE MONTHS.
The absolute horror !
From 18 to 18 1/2 he would have to defer his gratification !
From this day forward, LSU should always offer the exact amount of scholarships available.
Only 2 or three usually fail to qualify.
Actually they should save three for worthy walk-ons and academic superstars.
If we end up with say, 21 guys, who cares really.
On a roster that big what's 8 guys, right ?
I'm ashamed to be an LSU fan.
I hope Porter forgives us.
And I hope Kentucky beats us as long as he is at Kentucky.
And as for this Cameron Fordham sucker, that accepted Mile's greyshirt offer just like Coleman & Trindon, I pity him for not going to like SMU or Valdosta State where he could play this year.
He must have really low standards, imagine the bumpkin that would take one for the team like that....
Lastly, Les need to be fired.
All is lost.
No genius I, but i detect a note of sarcasm.
The truth is I feel the same way.
If it were my kid, I would have been a little upset; however, I would have told him this. "All my life I dreamed of setting foot on that field, much less playing on it as an LSU Tiger. I cannot wait to see you run out of the tunnel in the north endzone following those cheerleaders while the whole world cheers you and the team on. My shirt is going to pop open when I tell people YOU are an LSU football player. Good God, I am so proud of you. Now, put your big girl panties on and deal with it. You haven't died. You are going to take this minor challenge in your life and be better for it. For Christ's Sake, you are eighteen years old. You think this is the worst thing that can happen to you in life? Get over it. Need a tissue?"
But then again, maybe I am a terrible parent. I relly don't think anyone wanted to do this, but adversity does rear its ugly head every now and then. Yet, whatis the adversity? You wait for one year, grow and mature, adjust to school, hang out with girls who will do who knows what, and then play next with a scholarship. He sees this as a horror. This should be most people's worst nightmare.
I WISH this had been my story at eighteen.

Most lineman red shirt their first year. Nebraska in their heyday, would start an entire senior line class every year. Sorry it happened like it did. But sometimes things seem bad, but turns out working for the best.

s a lot of sense. LSU wasn't given any favors by the NCAA rule change but why the hell would they ask someone to grayshirt when he specifically told them he wasn't going to grayshirt
...because they obviously weren't willing to ask any others to greyshirt over him. They didn't communicate this during recruitment because they didn't intend to have to do it at the time.

You are not making a post answering a LSU fan. Just read his posts and LSU mafia. Seems like a couple of kids playing games. and yes there are others. Just love to disagree. It's all good. Hope Kentucky will love their new lineman. He could be an upgrade there.

So what's Porter going to do if Lee signs a baseball contract and Les comes by with a scholarship and says "It's yours if you want it..."

jcb - excellent reply/post. No, you are not a terrible parent. Excellent advice to any son or daughter!
Cutting to the chase - this execellent thread is missing emphasis on at least 2 very important points (IMO):
1. Miles did nothing wrong. He played by all NCAA/SEC rules re. greyshirting. 'Nuff said...
2. Miles is getting absolutely no credit for signing 27 of 27 academically qualified young men to play for LSU. Who knew? Miles? No. Any Nostradamus people on this board? No...
I think congratulations are in order for Miles and his coaching staff/recruiters. LSU is so doing the right thing to sign a recruiting class that is obviously so smart it can outsmart even the expectations of the coaches who recruited them in achieving a 100% academic qualifying rate.
Geaux LSU. I wish to tell all you guys that haven't followed recruiting for over 10 years that this has never "happened". This is a positive! All incoming class players qualifying to me says we have a "smart" group of athletes for years playing LSU football. I firmly believe that "smart" players for a team whose recruits just happen to be in the top 10 recruiting class is so much a plus for a college team that I have no words to describe just how proud I feel... Yes, I will hype LSU.
We need players that can learn the playbook. The smartest not only learn plays re. their position but also plays of all positions on the team. That way they know where other players are on any given play and what their fellow players should be doing/who they should be blocking, etc.
I prefer to give props to Miles & crew for signing a totally "smart" class.
I am sorry that the greyshirt offer had to be made to 2 of 27 LSU signees. E. Porter, I wish you only the best at Kentucky. They are a strong member of the SEC and I know you will help to make them proud.
Let's move on.

What I don't understand is why LSU didn't just grayshirt Wing...
I'm not gonna comment on the morality/immorality of the Les/Porter situation, but I will comment on this atrocious logic. Forgetting that Wing may actually compete for the starting punter job, regardless, he is only ONE injury, ONE player from being the starter anyway. The absolute clusterfrick of injuries that would have to go down for Porter to even contribute on Saturdays this year would likely have rendered everything about this season moot anyway.
There are 7-10 people between Porter and the field. There is ONE between it and Wing. If you can't see that grayshirting an OL makes a shite-ton more sense than grayshirting Wing, then you are either blinded by your anti-Miles bias or just not very smart. Perhaps both.

It's funny how the moral police are screaming over this issue. I wander what they thought about Josh Johns.
do you think he should have kept a grey shirt, since that is what he was offered, rather than give a him a full scholarship when another player didn't qualify?
E.P. has been the ONLY contraversial grey shirt. we have had trindon, rocky d, harry coleman, josh johns, cam fordham, d. alleman, and we offered Jason peters a grey shirt. where was all the kudos/love for how lsu handled these situations?
