I seem to remember reading some of his posts recounting some older games and some guys who played in the 70s and 80s. It was good stuff. He's completely wrong in this instance and is acting like an insufferable dick, which is even more laughable given he keeps misunderstanding the points being made, but that doesn't make him useless for all time. He's had some good things to add at times, assuming I am remembering correctly.

I think its funny he considers a defensive coordinator infallible and above criticism since he's a paid professional, yet spends much of his time on the political board criticizing Obama

All we heard this spring and now this summer is how great of a spring Welter had. Even called one of the "best ever" by Chavis I believe. However, even after that great spring he still went out and looked like our 3rd best mlb in the spring game, and he was playing with the first teamers.
I have minimal expectations for him this year...jmo

Yep. That's all I've been saying on this matter.
While Welter's play has indeed left something to be desired, he must be our best option or Chief wouldn't play him. Pretty obvious stuff here but some don't seem to be able to comprehend it or think they know better than Chavis himself.
To those...

Hopefully, LSU and Welter prove the critics wrong.
He won't. It would be impossible given the level of ignorance around here.
The hatred of Welter is now ingrained in the Rant. Even an All-American, first round draft choice season won't remove that. Once the well is poisoned it never clears up and we will hace a constant refrain from the never-beens bitching about the kid for years.

honest question, based on what we've seen welter do going on...what? 4 years now? Do you think he's capable of being an AA/1st rd draft pick?

Hell no!
But that isn't the point trying to be made here by some of us. If one of the most respected DC's in the country decides DJ is the best option, who the hell are we to argue with that?
Can't put it any simpler.

It doesn't matter. Here's a flash for you. Not everybodty who plays for LSU is or will be the greatest person to ever play that position.
Here is another flash for you: John chavis knows more about footbal, more about the players, more about what he is trying to have his defense do than you do or ever will. It's sobering I know but it's the truth.
He really does and posting pictures of a player missing a tackle doesn't prove anything, except ignorance.

If he sticks the fullback in hole, shed's his fricking block, squares a back up and holds his ground while delivering a blow that brings a back to the ground even 50% of the time, I will be ecstatic. Quit spewing your bullshite. We ALLLLL fricking know that Chavis is one of the best DC's in the goddamn nation. If he believes Welter is the best man for the job at this point in time, just as he was last year, then we have to ride with him. If people dont like the fact that DJ is not doing what he is supposed to do and not playing sound football, they can say that. They are right. You are wrong. Shut up.

gray tiger is an apologist, plain and simple. everyone saw the drop off from the MLB spot last year from 2012
Posted on 7/17/14 at 1:56 pm to Dr Von Nostrand
There is no way a player can totally suck at his position in his first year of starting, get totally abused by the fans,to getting better in the offseason and possibly one of the most relied upon players the next year.

Actually I'm a realist.
I know that not every player every year will be an All American.
I also know that Chavis knows way more than I or (gasp!!) you do.
I also know that posting stupid pictures to make an invalid point is pretty damn juvenile.
I also know that the lunch mob mentality on this site is really really ignorant.

It's not hard to understand the game of football. If you've played and coached at the HS level for 10+ years and attended coaching clinics in which these coaches speak at, you understand the scheme and assignments
Seriously, that's what you don't get. It's not hard to know the responsibilities of players. You can re-watch a play and know exactly what every player was supposed to do. What gaps they're assigned to, what zone, everything. It's not hard to see that against TCU on a 3rd and 11 we ran a base Cover 2 and Welter dropped to the 1st down marker (like he was supposed to), then they hit a slant at 5 yards, and instead of coming up and making a stop to make it 4th and 3, he stood there chopping his feet until the WR got to him and he tackled him...for a first down. There were literally dozens and dozens of plays like that all year. I saw them, you clearly did not. You think "Oh look, DJ made a tackle!!!!" Great, he also gave up a first down on a 3rd and 11.
I'm sure Chavis likes that Welter is often "in position", but what does that mean when the player can't finish it off? You cannot sit here and tell me DJ Welter inspires confidence in you

so just so we're clear.....
watching football and deciding if a particular player is good is well above our understanding
but leading the country is pretty simple so bash away.
why don't you apply this auto default to the paid professionals in all aspects of your life gray?

OK, utter silliness is taking over. It's starting to remind me of a Monty Python skit, which isn't a bad thing actually.
