I've never heard of The Van Buren Gang.

But Steve van Buren was a beast- superstar at LSU, and one of the NFL's best running backs of his time with the Eagles.

When he retired he was the NFL's all-time rushing leader.

His nephew is on this board, maybe he will respond

Not sure if you're talking about me, as it's been a while since I mentioned he was my uncle, but my brother is on here as well and also some of my cousins, so there are several of us. I sadly never met him, and actually neither did my mom. He moved to the US before my mom was born in Belize and then he was in the NFL when my mom moved to the states. I'm not sure if he even knew of her existence. He lost touch with a lot of his family when he moved away from what I understand. It seemed he sort of started his own family in philly.

One of the Baddest Mother frickers Ever to play at LSU and the NFL

His poor eyesight made him 4F for service in WW2, but he was a beast of a football player.

Mainly research, reading what he did etc

Known as "Wham-Bam" for his "punishing strength and explosive speed," the 6-foot-1, 200-pound halfback racked up four NFL rushing titles and the 1945 "triple crown" for leading the NFL in rushing, scoring and kickoff returns, and was a first-team All-NFL pick each of his first six seasons.

A knee injury forced Van Buren's retirement in 1952, but he stepped down as the NFL's all-time rushing leader (5,860 yards) and the single-season leader in rushing yards (1,146) and touchdowns (18).

Bernie Moore moved him to rb at lsu. Lead the nation in pts scored as a senior, weak team. 6ft 200# rb in 1950's is not normal

Van Buren is a name probably of Dutch origin but possibly German or Austrian.

If I am not mistaken, he at one time owned and opperated a hamburger joint in that strip mall which is north of Chimes Street. Its been years since I have been back to BR so I do not know if that strip mall even exist today. His joint was right next to that grocery store in the mall. Dang good burgers.

Steve was the brother of Ebert, another stellar LSU Tiger. Both played for the Eagles.
